I really need to get .mp4 & .m4v formats to play in quicktime alternative 1.68Final, i dont want to use the real quicktime as last time i did before, it was horror!! need to watch my vidcasts!! and they changed from xivd to m4v dam them! i cant get the video just the audio if i rename the ext. to .avi. but i think i need codec but what i have fddshow 3vix and divx, xvid and others but important i dont want to install a codec bundle/pack..as it messed up my pc all to hell before!

QT alt is just QT codecs, Media Player Classic and Cyberlink's dshow wrapper right? So when you say QT alt you mean MPC or another player using cyberlink's wrapper?

Personally I would suggest avoidng quicktime completely, unless the m4v is DRM'ed. QT's mp4 support is just crap.

Rename the wrongly used m4v extension to the mp4 and make sure that MPC is using directshow and not quicktime for rendering. MPC has an internal mp4 parser and aac audio decoder. It doesn't have a AVC or MPEG-4 video decoder though so you need something like ffdshow (AVC and MPEG-4) or CoreAVC (AVC only) installed.

You might also want to update to the latest MPC build. You can find mine here: http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/

i dont know how qt alt works, i have that last mpc installed 1.68final the m4v is not drm but rev3 & pbs shows are in those formats and i need to play those so i can watch them on my pctv using myhtpc.... why are you saying wrongly named m4v? i have ffddshow also when i played it thru mpc i get this popup & then it plays but just in audio:

The latest MPC is actually the 6.4.8.7CVS build that I compiled earlier today. Not that it would make any difference.

Looks like "MP4V" to me. Make sure that ffdshow is enabled to handle it, otherwise it won't decode it.

Start menu-->ffdshow-->Video decoder configuration-->enable DivX 4. Don't ask me why Milan grouped the fourCC there.

About the wrong extension. Under MPEG-4 specs m4v is a raw MPEG-4 Part 2 stream. So you demux your video from the .mp4 to .m4v. If you name your mp4, m4v, then what do you name the video if you demux it?

huh? why are you asking me this, i dont know, i didnt make the thing. i looked up the m4v ext up and it mentions quicktime, so how do i get qt qlt to play it?

ALSO......divx is checked the only things that arent are mp42,mp41,h.263+ do i need these checked? i tried checking them then playing and nope do i need to restart???

It was a rhetorical question. I am just pointing out how wrong apple was for missusing that extension. It is like calling an mpg file m2v.

5634504D is definatly hex for MP4V.

    You shouldn't need to restart.

No problems decoding mp4's here in MPC using ffdshow.

It wasn't meant to be a joke. All I am saying is that Apple shouldn't use .m4v for mp4 files and if you have such files you should rename them.

I have a 2006 build installed. Without PP both should output the same quality. Could be that there were problems with mp4v support back in 2002. I think I can remember something along those lines.

Perhaps you had pp enabled in the old build, but not the new or something? You could try enabling MP4V support in XviD. As I recall though it has some issues with mp4 playback.
