I dunno about the soccer thread since ive never even look at it but i would hazard a guess that its drifted off topic too many times and too radically and about stupid crap. Just take a look at the Scams thread for instance.

No, the soccer thread is purely about soccer, mostly to do with the English Premiership, but really covers everything. It has ahd a lot of posts - nearly 500 and has stayed on topic the whole time. I dont quite understand why it was closed but, thankfully, ive had it reopened.

I didn't close any of the latest threads here but for some of those threads I understand why they are closed. Let me explain something to those who never thought of it, you arent the only aD users. There are new users everyday who look over the forum and believe it or not (as we dont notice it anymore) aD forum is A LOT to look at for a newbie, to a newbie, its huge!! So what if the same threads hang around cause people just dont want the thread to come to an end when it should?

    1. Big numbers of posts are intimidating to new users, they are definately not gonna read through the entire 250 posts just to make a reply and they wont make a duplicate thread cause the forum rules say not to.

    2. They go away for a few days and come back and the same fucken threads are still listed on top, even though more threads have sprung up they ain't gonna go lookin cause as i said, to a newbie, aD is a lot!

Like it or not, aD needs advertising to basically live, and to get advertising aD needs a good user database, and unfortunately, in this area, most of the world are newbies, aD needs (now i said [bold]NEEDS[/bold]) to attract newbies because they come in the biggest numbers. If they get intimidated and run off to another forum, they're lost and gone forever!

Have u ever seen a thread that has stayed on topic for a long time just get closed? thats the reason why, because too much has been said and its just repeating itself over and over again sticking on the top of the forum like a stupid piece of junk mail u get every single day in your inbox no matter how many times u try filter it out!

    Now here's another reason...

When a lot of users participate in a thread and 2 users decide we're gonna bullshit on and on and on and on and on but not go off topic, they are costing aD money. Yes I said money because for every single post, every user subscribed to that thread has to get an update email, and bandwidth sure as shit aint cheap! So the figures for one thread wioth a lot of users in that situation might not amount to much, but what if the forum was left to just delv into 1000's of threads like that? aD would have a serious problem wouldnt they?

See there are factors why moderators and admins behave in this way and people should really think about it all before they give out about it!

    End of Rant :)

um...nice rant, and i accpet a lot of it for the main forums of afterdawn. However, i dont see much merit in it in relation to the Safety Valve. I do see the need to close threads that run their course, or if people start flaming, but a sports thread that has gone on topic for the best part of a year, and will continue on topic for years to come, does not need to be closed, in my opinion.

Granted there are 500 odd posts in it, but it is really for people to join in at any time, and for the few of us who comment each week. My other football thread is getting close to 700 posts and over 7000 views. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23277 It will live for ever ;-)

it wont live forever, every thread die's.

See in the end man, it will just be you posting on it, and it will become pointless, u already have posted 208 times on that thread, almost half of it as just you out of the about 10 people who contributed to it, which is far more than anyone else on it, that includes often a few in a row which proved it was losing its popularity. I guess soccer just aint that appealing anymore man :p

Why do u have to go and say some shit like that though? You dont realise it but a moderator closed your thread and here you are basically saying, u cant touch me, i can get it re-opened anyway, which im pretty sure pissed off that mod. You might be able to get it re-opened, but mods can delete posts so whichever mod it was, dont try taunt them like that. You dont know it but out of the whole mod team there is one group of them (which im happy to say im in) that stick together no matter what because mods always get shit. Ive had people complain im assiting piracy on the forum as an attempt to take a shot at me for something (which dRD didnt tell me who, wonder why ;-) ) but at least I know ive got a group behind me to back me up on it always. So I dont know who closed soccer because I havent been talking to many mods lately, but remember if its someone in that group u arent just annoying one you are annoying them all. No1 on this forum is outside the rules or better than anyone else and that includes us too, shit ive nearly been banned over and over again, just ask dRD that, he had to threaten me on the forum in front of everyone to stop or goodbye, it wasnt even my fault but hey, its cool now :) and If i gave an attitude which basically was saying, i dont have to listen to mods or admins, u better believe id be thrown out!

    Good points Dela

What I thought from reading you original rant, was if all these e-mails are going out, why isn't that ad space used. All you need to do is have an ad at the top of the email, scroll down and the link to the updated thread is there. This could be a good idea if that band width is a problem.
Also I do agree with the regular forum threads. Anything more than 2 pages and I am less likely to read it. Also any comment about the lenght of your first post here and I am also not likely to read it.

But in the Safety value section, I think some flex abilty should be allowed. As this in not really a place for questions, but releasing steam. So if your question keeps getting hidden in Safety value, don't post there. That Why I like Safety value to read the new rants of the day. Also I like All Other Topics as it has fresh new questions that I try to answer before they go to page 2 and I am less likely to see them.

Afterdawn doesnt put those kinda ad's on emails because email washing programs would list it as spam email then. The Newsletter has had to be changed a lot because some programs blocked it as junk mail and filtered it out.

As for the comments about the Safety valve, thats true but what I said earlier, we arent the only people on the forum, other people might like to leave off some steam too. Like someone might come in with an interest in soccer, see a thread 427 posts long and decide, fusk that im not gonna read that, and u would want to read it to make sure u dont repeat what someone else says. You cant make duplicate threads either so the same thing applies to the Safety Valve as any other forum. The only difference is i could come in here and start going fusk shit cunt bumhole wanker etc etc and i wouldnt be banned for it because its the safety valve, if u got something to say, u say it here, thats the point of the forum. Ive already suggested to dRD that a new forum be opened called Chat Forum or something!

EDIT: also there is absolutely no competition for the longest threads on aD, i mean the longest on aD exist in the DVDXCopy forums, 1000's of posts long but no1 gives a fusk lol! Anyway's, what would u guys think of another forum to be opened that would deal with issues like if u wanna talk about sport or whatever, because the safety valve is the place where we are supposed to go to say things like, I CANT TAKE THIS SHIT ANYMORE or God I love this place lol!

Sports and chat areas might be good. But then you invite a different crowd that could lowere the level of AD. No offence but some sports freakes are just freaks, You might see more crap other places. But A chit chat thing is good in pricipal, but geting it started can be hard. Look right now, You have a good question, then after some time it lightens up and you get good discussion. Look at Oh this is...
It was a serious thread about seeing Sam naked, and then it got into good wholsome conversation.

Talking to a newbie, she spend a long time just coming up with somthing moderately intelegent to say in a general disscussion. I said relax we will only bit if you want us to:) So I can see the chit chat think back firing, but would be really good if it worked.

Good point about the ad space update thing. I didn`t think about spam guard.

All thought every once and awhile, it is good for the Mod hiding in the shadows to wake up. Kill lots of topics and have use rebuild. Strenghts the lower races. Baballon 5 is the best.

lol dela - im not against the rules and im not saying that i have some mods that will reopen threads for me at will. Im saying that im gonna keep PM'ing every MOD if my soccer thread gets closed - its harmless and its a good way to chat. There are other posters who enjoy it and as soccer is one of my passions, and others, then i dont see any reason at all why it shouldnt stay open

    * Reopened cuz i type too slow and Herbsman beat me to it ... *

Something I think in your old age as an Afterdawn Addict have forgotten:
    Oh and...
    1. Unsolicited harrassment by members who think they're above such rules and such isnt tolerated here and consititutes as a violation of one or both of the aforementioned notes

    2. I didnt close your thread so dont come whining to me. Whoever closed it had a damn good reason to do so and I'm not about to undo anything. In fact ive never BEEN to the thread so i dont bother.

    3. The primary purpose for Afterdawn, in case you have forgotten Oriphus is to facilitate discussion regarding multimedia and filesharing and the like. While "All other Topics" and "Safety Valve" are available for the occasional side trip you and I both know that you have turned it into a random clutter of posts -- in many cases simply replying to yourself seemingly to keep a thread going as well as the host of absolutely absurd posts (recall the classic "Oriphus is Sexy" and "My Own Thread"). To a great extend, lots of this has been left to slide however it seems that you do not know when and where to draw the line.

    4. Above all, as a Mod, myself personally, IMHO would dare say i'm one of the most lenient and fair of Mods. I've taken a lot of crap from members who "didnt like the rules", ive negotiated "hostilities between members" and in general, have been an exemplary member of Afterdawn. Now as an AD Addict you yourself are fully aware of the rules and such of this forum and in such an esteemed position, you should be one to encourage new and potential members of what proper conduct on these forums are. Taking threads and going way off topic is NOT proper, nor is it courteous -- see my Scams thread if you've got no idea of what I'm talking about. "Threatening" to spam mods with PMs is also not the proper way to resolve a dispute either. You're 22 -- act your age: whining and threatening accomplishes nothing past the age of 14.

    5. I understand your passion for the sport and for the thread and yes AD has allowed this thread to live for quite some time. If it is to be the end of that thread now, let it end on a good note -- not on a spam note.

    6. Being a Mod does not make me above rules and regs -- nor does being an AD Addict. If you wish to be a member of this community, please respect the rules: you and I are both adults (im 20 if y'all are wondering) here -- lets be a tad more civilized and adult-like.
