I've been backing up PS2 games for over a year now without any troubles whatsoever. Then about 3 months or so ago I built a computer, pretty sweet setup too, everything works beautifully on it.

Every single game I've burned with this computer does not play. I've switched media from Ritek G04's (when they were good) to Verbatum Super AZO Dye (MCC02 code) and back, tried Nero and Decrypter to burn, tried different burners, different burn speeds, went into msconfig and stopped all programs from starting at bootup, everything I can think of. Still no go. Every once in a while they'll play, but 99% of the time, nope. I've also tried a laptop with an external burner to no avail.

Now all the games I've burned before this play just fine on my PS2 still, so I'm sure my modchip still works alright.

So this is driving me insane and I've got like 7 PS2 images on my hard drive just waiting to be burned (successfully). PC and PS2 specs are as follows:

    AMD Athlon 64 3400+ CPU
    1GB Ultra DDR PC3200 RAM
200GB Western Digital SATA hard drive with about 100GB free
    LiteOn SOHD-167T reader
LiteOn LDW-411S@811S writer (used this for most of my successful burns previously, also as reader in many cases)
Pioneer DVR-106 external USB2.0 writer (also used this many times in past for games with great results)
    V4 PS2 with Magic 3.1 modchip

Any help is greatly appreciated, as this is driving me batty...

does the new computer have updated firmware for your burner?
You may try that. Can't really think of any other reason why your burner would just stop making working back ups. Like i said unless on the old system you updated it, and then just installed the stock software for the burner on the new system

I'll give it a shot, but I doubt that's it. I've got hacked firmware on my internal burner, but I don't really burn games with that, just movies. I use the external for games. I just use DVD Decrypter to rip and burn but I've also tried Nero. Tried on my cousin's laptop with my external with no luck. But I'll check into my external's firmware.

try burning a movie and see if it works.if that works then your burner is burning.besides you tried a laptop(its still another computer) so the computer doesnt seem to be at fault just yet.what games are you trying to backup?

if you can, show the decrypter log.

most definetly sounds like a media issue
    change the media again,
i am currently using RiDisc's go4's,and they have never failed me yet
and use alcohol 120 to burn
    see if that solves it

it couldnt be the media.usually if you have more than one brand not working for you like that it would more likely be a bad burner.i have yet to find any media that hasnt worked for me though there were quality differences.ive used sony, max, verb, tdk, and philips.and my burner aint that great.best thing to do is rule out probable causes with the computer.

Well the Decrypter log says the burn completed successfully, so I really doubt that would tell us any useful information, but next time I try I'll post the log anyway. Tried different media, burners, and computers. still same results. Maybe it's the new version of Decrypter. Does anyone happen to have install files from the previous version?

The games I've tried are Fight Night Round 2, Dark Alliance, Area 51, Burnout 3, Medal of Honor: European Assault, Xenosaga 2, and God of War (rebuilt using sticky thread as guide). I did happen to get a working copy of Fight Night Round 2 after about 15 tries, everything else will work about 5% of the time.

I know the modchip still works because all my other games work, and I don't get the "Please insert a valid PS2 game" screen, just the unable to read disc screen.

I've already used my trial up on A120, and I'd rather not buy it just for this issue. Are there any special settings in Decrypter I should know about? I've tweaked it according to ScubaPete's guide for hard to rip movies, maybe that has something to do with it? I burn movies like a pyro and they work fine. Actually, I just tried one I burned recently on these same discs in my PS2 and it gave me the same error. So I'm going to buy some TYs, hopefully that solves my problem.

Thanks for replying guys and any further ideas would be greatly appreciated.

well I just got some TY media and tried a burn, that didn't work out. I'm ready to format my HD at this point and I really don't want to go to that extreme (although I think I'm going to anyway, it's gettin chaotic in there).

So I've tried different media, computers, programs, burners with no luck. What else is there to change. Unless I have some software conflict going on, but that'd be a pretty weird coincidence since I tried a different PC and the owner of that PC has different programs than I have, maybe a couple of the same here and there.

I know the modchip still works, all my older backups work on the first try. What do you guys think about this?

i think your thread has confused the hell out of me.

but seriously, what burn speeds did you use?thats all i could find blame in.you could try recopying a backup that does work.just to make sure the problem lies with your setup and not the fact that all the games you tried to copy are hard to copy games.alot of people have had trouble with all of those games you mentioned.

I've tried 1x, 2x and 4x. Yeah, this is confusing the hell out of me too ;)

I'll try to copy an already copied game and post results. I started to do that before, but got sidetracked (I ripped but it's still on the HD).

I tried burning an already burned game that I have, the copy I made just now doesn't work but the one I've had for a while does. This is driving me nutz :(

I also tried to burn while in safe mode and that didn't help any.

woudnt it make sense that its your ps2 laser if you say the games work 5% of the time but 95% no luck. maybe your mod has given up the ghost. it just sounds like it has to be something simple. oh shit imagine not being able to copy games you poor bastard!!

at this point, cleaning your ps2 lens with a cotton swab and alcohol wouldnt hurt.i know other games work but you said that one of the movies that work on another dvd player didnt work on the ps2,correct?besides its good to give an old ps2 a periodical thorough cleaning.who knows it might even be your problem.the ps2 lens is very bizzare in the way it functions sometimes.

yeah I was debating that but I really don't want to open up the PS2 again, I remember having issues with that ribbon cable connecting the power and eject buttons. I even broke the cable once. But I'll give it a shot, it's about the only other thing I can think of.

i would start again, uninstall dvd decrypter and reinstall, and leave the settings alone.
    burn the game @ x4.
get your self a sample dvd pack(if you can get one cheap),and see how it goes.

PS2s will only play DVD format (VOB files) movies as far as I know. I know the PSP is supposed to play UMD format, but I don't know about the PS2.

Also, posting email addresses is against the rules, you may want to edit that out.
