can't update windows xp

    I cant update windows xp. Every time it goes for the validation tool I get the error
    <C:\documen-1\\locals-1\temp\IXP000.tmp\setup.exe> reason: the path specified can not be found.

    This is a brand new alienware with the factory installed XP O.S.
    I called them and they said I needed to call microsoft who in turn wants $$$ to help me. I really Don't want to do a clean install. Any suggestions.
