Looking to capture S-Video. There are a couple different products out there (TDK IndiCapture, ADS DVD Xpress, etc). Being new to this, and before I squander the family fortune on a converter, I'm wondering if anyone has some advice on what to buy. I'm not looking to break the bank, but less than $150 (US) would work. ANyone have any suggestions/caveats? Have both USB 2.0 and firewire. -DaG
I'm no capture expert, but I can say that you should stay away from USB capture devices. USB, even USB 2, isn't really designed for sustained transfers, and as a result you won't get good quality that way.
If your Goal is to capture the Highest Quality video Possible then Vurbal is right you should stay away from USB devices.... There are a few Firewire Devices that are Very good Like the ADVC-100 but the Canopus ADVC-100 can run you $250US.... There is a Internal PCI Card that will produce Simular Quality called the "Canopus ACEDVio" which you can get from a reputible seller on E-bay for as Low as $149 US...These devices will Produce capture quality far superior to any Comparably Priced USB device or Analogue PCI Device... These devices use a Hardware DV Encoder Chip which converts the Incomeing Analoge Video signal to digital DV AVI format which is the Same format used in High End Digital Video Cameras..These devices also have an audio lock feature that eliminates the Chance of audio and Video sync problems which is one of the Biggest Problems with Analogue capture devices..And because it uses a hardware Encoder Chip it elimates the dependance of your CPU to compress the video in real time.....
