    Here's an odd one -

I have a few VHS movies that I thought I would back-up onto DVD before the VHS tape stretches beyond recognition or disintegrates. Normally, I use my Sony DVD/VHS recorder and just dub from VHS to DVD. No such luck, the DVD recorder said it was "copy protected" and stopped the recording. So then, I popped the VHS tape into a VHS player that's connected to my computer and I tried using Sony Vegas and Windows Movie Maker to capture the video. Normally this works, again, no such luck. Actually, the audio recorded, but the video just continued looping the first few frames.

Has anyone come across this type of copy protection? I own the VHS tape, it's about 4 or 5 years old. Any suggestions on how to back up this tape to DVD?

It's Macrovision and is on a lot of commercial tapes.
I use an ancient 'Optex' 'Video Stabilizer', purchased from Radio Shack years ago.
The yellow video lead from the tape player goes in and out to the DVD recorder.
The company (and others)is still around;you can still buy them.
They are a staple item on eBay.
