I captured 6 episodes of three's company for my wife in mpeg2 format. It came out as saying the file was 2.9GB. When I tried to put it to dvd using sonic/my dvd it said there was not enough room on the disk. I had to re-encode to mpeg1 format with low resolution to produce a file that was 1.8 GB. It finally said I could burn it with 800mb left over on the dvd! What's up with that? The mpeg1 format looked like crap! Any suggestions?
Well you should have been able to author the Captured Mpeg2 file directly to DVD without re-encodeing..The only thing that would make the DVD authoring program(Sonic) want to re-encode your Files is if you did not Capture the Files useing DVD Compliant Capture settings... the Mpeg2 files have to use a certain Resolution and audio format and Sample rate for the Files to be DVD Compliant ...These are the Valid NTSC DVD Capture resolutions: 720+480 Full D1(Mpeg2) 704+480 Broadcast D1(Mpeg2) 352+480 Half D1(Mpeg2) 352+240 SIF/Cif(Mpeg1 and Mpeg2) These are the Valid DVD audio Formats: LPCM (Wav) at 48000HZ Mpeg1 Layer 2 at 48000hz DTS(Dolby Theater Sound) at 48000HZ Dolby Digital AC3 at 48000HZ So as Long as your Captured files fall within these Perameters then they should go on to DVD without re-encodeing them and if your Files are within these Perameters and Sonic Still wantes to re-encode the Files then you should Dump Sonic and try something better Like DVDLab for authoring your DVD"s..... Cheers
I was hoping you would reply minion thanks! I'm gonna get the nero ultra package soon now that I'm starting to do more than backing up my dvd collection. DvD shrink and sonic were good for that purpose but It's time to move on I think.
Just don"t use Nero 6 to encode your Files because it"s encoder is awefull and "Nero Vision Express" will allways re-encode your Video files which ruins the quality...For putting Mpeg2 files on to DVD i suggest useing DVDLab as it doesn"t come with an encoder and DVD Lab can be used to put SVCD Files on a DVD and in SVCD Format you can get over 4 hours of video on a DVD....Cheers
Minion, Does DVD-Lab have to reencode to put SVCD onto DVD and have it work in a DVD player? My DVD player will not play SVCD, and I can only capture in 480x480 resolution without dropping frames (slow computer). I've made a DVD using showbiz but have to reencode the 480x480 MPEG to 720x480 MPEG. Final quality was good enough for the VCR tapes I was using.
DVDLab can Make SVCD DVD"s without re-encodeing that Will Play on Most all DVD players even my Sony DVD player plays them and it doesn"t even Play SVCD... If you can only capture at 480+480 and lower then Try Captureing at 352+480 which is a Fully DVD Compliant Resolution and so is 352+240 and you will be able to put those files on DVD without re-encodeing.... Cheers
Thanks Minion. I get good quality reencoding to 720x480 but the reencoding takes forever on my PIII. I'll try capturing at the lower resolutions and see if they will play on my DVD player and compare the quality. According to the DVD player compatibility listings it shouldn't play SVCD and VCD quality is noticably worse but I'll give the SVCD a try. One more quicky question. I'm playing around with a trial version of mpeg2vcr to split up my mpegs so I can set chapter points (showbiz is not sensitive enough and I read it goes out of audio sync if you set chapters within a single mpeg). If trying to capture at at a lower mpeg resolution doesn't work out and I were to continue reencoding to 720x480 should I do that step in mpeg2vcr or in showbiz (i.e. which encoder is better)? Supposedly showbiz won't reencode an mpeg compliant file before transcoding and authoring so maybe I can save some time. Steve O
Well I wouldn"t use either for encodeing... I generally allways use a Good Quality Standalone Mpeg encoder Like the MainConcept encoder as the Quality of the Mpeg encodeing directly relates to the Quality of the Resulting Mpeg2 file.... You still run an old P-3 ehh?? You Know you can Upgrade your PC to a 2.5ghz P-4 or an Athlon XP 2800+ for about $125...I recently upgraded my moms P-3 to a 2.7ghz P-4 for $150 canadian... Cheers
Yup been following your posts for some time. I'm holding out to leap frog up to an Athlon64 but it'll be a little longer. In the mean time I like to see what my PIII/win98 can and can't do. When xp-sp2 comes out retail I'll upgrade to that though my old MontegoII sound card isn't fully supported. Steve O
