Win XP Pro [service pack 1....with the 1394Filter for Canopus] Asus A7N8X-X nForce2 ATI Radeon 7000 graphics card Canopus ADVC50 mounted in pci slot 1 x Gateway 2-Port IEEE 1394 FireWire PCI Controller Card Windows recognizes the digital converter card [Canopus] and the firewire card. Virtual VCR, VirtualDub, Adobe Premier Pro 7 and Ulead's Video Capture software do not recognise a capture device, [all video options in menus were greyed out]. Ulead gives the only detailed error message. "Video Capture is unable to access the capture device. Make sure capture driver has been installed.............." I CAN CAPTURE with Windows Movie Maker, but only in WMV format. Any help would be appreciated.
Well Virtual-Dub and Virtual-VCR Can not capture from Firewire Devices...Also make sure that the Chipset on your Firewire Card is not made by "Texas Instruments" because Canopus Products are Incompatibly with the Texas Instruments Chipsets in Firewire Cards... To capture from a firewire device you need to use a Native DV Capture program like "WinDV" or "DVIO" or "Scenalyzer Live"..... To Capture to DV AVI with Windows Movie Maker you have to select the "DV AVI" format when setting up your Video Capture, If you can Capture to WMV then you should also be able to Capture to DV AVI.... Cheers
Thank you Minion. My main interest is converting over 200 vhs tapes [6 hrs each]to DVD. I'll continue to research this, but do you have an opinion as to the best 2 or 3 softwares [preferably freeware], that CAN capture from a firewire card? There's got to be something better than Windows Movie Maker. If I got a firewire card that is compatable with Canopus, will that give me more choices of software that will allow me to capture from a VCR or an S-Video direct from a sat receiver? Thanks again Minion or anyone else that attempts to help.
Well Like I said "WinDV" and "DVIO" are Both Freeware DV Capture programs and Should work with your Capture device....
I don't think I was clear enough in my last posting. I'm only interested in converting VHS video tapes or direct from Sat. Rec. using S-Video connection. I did install WinDV and DVIO, and they may work if or when I use a DV Camera. If these softwares are also used for converting from VHS, then I'm still back to my main problem.....all software I've installed [EXCEPT MOVIEMAKER], will not allow me to capture. Can anyone even guess at to why MovieMaker works and nothing else does? What is unique about that software from all the other ones? Could it be that it does not use drivers while the other softwares do? I've also been in touch with Canopus tech support and one of them was able to capture with my same Canopus card, a firewire card and Ulead VideoStudio 8 which I have installed and can't capture with. The only thing I can think of to try is to try a different firewire card which doesn't make much sense since Moviemaker can capture. Thanks in advance for any help.
If moviemaker works, so should other software. I have a feeling it's your settings, and not the hardware at fault.
Since I CAN capture with Win Movie Maker, I agree, the logical explantion is.....I must not have the proper settings in the other 5 or 6 softwares [or 3 or 4, if we don't include Virtual-Dub and Virtual-VCR that cannot capture from Firewire Devices]. I don't believe this is the case. The settings are pretty basic and I've tried all the settings over and over. Again. Winows [device manager], does recognize the firewire card and the digital converter. In the softwares, I either get an error message like..."unable to access the capture device"...and/or.....the video options are greyed out. Doesn't it make sense that if windows recognizes a firewire card and the softwares cannot access the capture device [which I believe is in reference to the firwire card], THEN the firewire card drivers must be the problem? AND....for some reason Windows Movie Maker does not need updated drivers for the firewire card, enabling me to capture. Does this make sense? The only thing I can think of to try is to locate updated drivers for the VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controler.
Well, there goes that theory. The VIA website has no drivers for the firewire card. It just says....."Drivers for 1394 are included in all Microsoft operating systems that support firewire". My next plan is to try another firewire card. Maybe this VIA card is incompatable with my Asus A7N8X-X nForce2 mainboard. Windows sees it but the mainboard doesn't allow the software to use it. I don't know. I'm just gabbing at anything I can think of.
