Capturing VHS on PC, Help any1?

Hi

I am trying 2 capture VHS on my PC but i am not sure wat cables i nees, i have a HP Pavillion computer 512Ram 2.93GHz 160HDD and i aam sure i have a Video card at the front there is 2 slots one is named Svideo and the other composite ons black and the other yellow, my VHS has the 3 holes at the front, red, white and yellow one. And only 1 scart port at the back. Can someone tell me wat is the name of the cables which i need 2 connect 2 my pc. thank

 

Those connections are all for video OUT.
You need to purchase a capture device.

 

would you noe any good caputre devices? and would you also now what else i would need 2 complete the proccess of recording on my pc? Thanks alot

hi there, may i suggest you save your money and purchase a dvd recorder instead. I have a HP Pavilion, same specs as you. I went out and bought a high speed usb dvd capture cable it was utterly useless to me, wouldn't capture sound or video at all, piece of rubbish I wasted $200 (Aus) on it, so would advise anyone thinking of buying one to forget it and save your money to get a descent dvd recorder that records straight to dvd. Thought I would let you know

 

ok, ill keep that in mind. But did you buy a capture device?? or a cable? because if youv got the same pc as me and tv card all i would need is the capture device, + did u use a happauge?

 

If you want to simply record TV, then go grab a recorder.
You'll get what you want, commercials and all, with no menus, nor much of anything else.
If you want to record high quality (not the HQ setting on the recorder), edit out commercials, author a DVD with menus for multiple episodes, etc., get a Hauppauge PVR card.
It's (the PVR-150) about half the money of a recorder, and comes with all the software you need.

 

it is a capture device that I have, its a lead that connects up to the vcr, and records the sound and picture well was supposed to anyway. I still think you would be better off buying a dvd recorder, just my opinion though.

 

USB devices rely on the computer having good USB 2.0 support.
Even if the hardware is in place, not many actually have the USB 2.0 updated drivers installed.
If you spent $200 on a USB device, and it didn't work, might we know what device it is, and what software you tried with it?
Did you ever contact the support staff for it?

I would suspect that it's because you have an HP, which is so proprietary, it's a wonder they even connect to the internet.

But rebootjim i have a HP PC with a TV card i think, thers a Sv Slot and a Video slot which is like one socket which has places for little wires, So now do i need a capture device?? because you metioned the hauppage pvr-150, But now i need to know if i need to buy this http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/products/data_usb.html
could you tell me, do i need this capture device ubove, or do i just buy some cables???? And if so, just to know it my VCR has one scart port and the 3 colour slots,red,white,yellow. so should i buy the cables or that up there? Thanks alot

 

Find out for sure.
If you do, it will only work with the bundled HP software.

Do not get the usb device you linked to. Too slow.
Why do you want to go with USB?
Internal PCI is much better.

You can go two ways from the VCR.
SCART to composite.
You'll need the right adapter cable for this, as well as an audio adapter cable.

Composite (those red, white and yellow plugs) to composite.
You'll go direct from yellow to yellow (this is the video portion).
You'll need an adapter cable from composite (red and white) to stereo mini, which plugs into your sound card's LINE IN port.

my laptop works great I have no complaints about my HP Pavilion.
The capture device I have is called a Belkin Hi-Speed DVD Creator (USB 2.0) it came with program called Ulead VideoStudio v6.0, and drivers for it, which I updated, which of course did nothing for it to actually capture properly. I have experimented with so many programs its a joke, even tryed Adobe Premiere and that didn't work either, so I have given up on it. Glad I was able to help you out a bit endz, I just thought I would let you know, didn't want anyone else falling into the trap like I did.

But rebootjim you said u need alod of cables, Could you tell me the specific cables whihc i need, The names and briefly wat they are for. Such as, the VCR has 1 scart port and the 3 colour ports, could you please tell me which cables i need, the 3 clour ones and the scart one. This is for video from the VCR to the computer (yellow to yellow).

Composite (RCA) audio to stereo mini cable: http://www.adorama.com/images/Product/BELYAC6.JPG
This goes from the red/white on the VCR to the LINE IN port on your sound card (or capture card if it has audio inputs).

Those are the only two cables you need, and cheaper than going from SCART to composite.

because one of the cables are black instead of red, is it ok?

 

Colour doesn't matter. That one will work fine for the audio.
