Hi i have all the components for my next pc build bought. these are: AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard "x XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 "XXX Edition" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI Coolit Systems Domino A.L.C Silent Watercooling System LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive OCZ Intel Extreme XMP 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache I also have the psu sorted. question is, what case should i get to fit all of this in with enough cooling? i have an £80 ish budget and was looking at a Coolermaster Storm 'scout' case. does anyone know if the water cooling will fit correctly in this case correctly, bearing in mind it doesnt fit in an NZXT Hush case properly which has the mandatory 120mm fan slot required for mounting? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks,
That'll be OK I suppose. GameXStream units are very weak, and powering an AMD Quad is no mean feat as they're very inefficient. I'm not sure how long it will last in the role, but it should be OK initially.
You should do a little research before posting something like that. And idle load matters to a PSU? Hardly. A real 700W PSU would laugh at a Phenom II's power consumption. (I'm well aware the i7s use more power than the Phenom IIs, and I would say the same for those, before you jump to conclusions). However, a GameXStream 700W is not a true 700W unit, nowhere near it, they aren't very good units. I'm sorry. I thought that you were saying that the phenom II was very inefficient. The way you said it made me believe you were trash talking the cpu. lol.
Well, I am to an extent, it uses a lot more power for the amount of work it does compared to some other CPUs, but the i7 is no better.
You can find about 300 cases that will work find your your needs on newegg. I found a few $25 cases that should meet your needs completely. It's just a matter of what looks good to you. BTW...The Phenom II is a waist. The 2.66GHZ I7 is about the same cost as the 3.2GHZ Phenom II, and it is a lot faster...with a better upgrade path. If you are buying the mainboard & DDR3 anyway, you might as well go I7.
The cpu may be around the same price but the whole platform cost of the i7 is higher. You would have to pay for an over $200 motherboard and triple channel memory kit. But if he has the money i7 would make a great computer.
Agreed, the i7 is a MUCH better performer (as the i7 usually shares in AMD's advantages with certain video editing programs) but the motherboards are a fair bit more expensive. The CPU is, however, $35 more expensive in the US, and you can get much cheaper boards for AMDs than the i7s, not that you necessarily should, but you can. For instance, an MA770T-UD3P is $85, the MA790XT-UD4P is $140, whereas the cheapest i7 boards start at $180, and DDR3 is mandatory for i7s, it's optional for AMD, depending or not whether you use the AM2 or AM3 platform. Besides, why discuss this when the OP has already bought the parts for his system?
