Hi, I've just moved into my new house. The house has been CAT 5 wired. What my problem is is that all the rooms have a phone line socket but the wiring is CAT 5. I have my router in the atic connected to the CAT 5 cables for the rooms which I want plug in internet acces. The problem is the rooms I want to plug in an Etherenet Cable from a computer which leads to the router all have standard phone line sockets so my cable will not fit in. I was wondering if there is such a thing as an ethernet to phone line adapter I could get to solve this problem without having to replace the phone line fittings? I've looked online but can't find any. Any help would be much appreciated.
are you certain that house is wired for cat5 as cat5 cables are 8 wires compared to phone which is 4 wires, also the cat5 connectors are bigger all around compared to the phone connector.
If the wiring really is cat5, then go get some new wallplates...they are not expensive, and it is not difficult or dangerous to install them...most wallplates have screw terminals to make the job super-easy. It will look correct and you will have faster, more reliable connections.
More & more new homes in Australia are being wired in cat5. I imagine as here a Central Filter, or an individual filter at each phone point is required for ADSL. Dual wall plates can give phone off the primary line and Ethernet ex a router with their appropriate sockets. Various adapters can make installation quite easy without the need for crimping or hard wiring to the sockets.
I read through the report and it was a great source of information. Thanks for providing the great read! Red Hot Line Wall Phone
