catfreak I read about you putting SOHW1693S (PC drive) in your liteon and you liked it better than your old liteon. After doing hrs of reading.. Im seeing that liteon will be what I iwll need to go w/ as its the only one that will do what I need it to do...does this mean that I can purchase any of the SOHW1693S (PC drive) drives and be able to do to it what I could w/ the old lite on? Do you have a primer I could read or know of one that tells me more about this? Thank you so much! your the only one Ive seen w/ this solution and I think that is what we would like to do. Go for a cheap replacement drive but allow me to convert my vhs tapes to dvd.

[ catfreek ] Have done a DVD drive conversion on both a RHD04 and R04 using a SHOW-1693s. I [rarely] use the ilo’s for playing. I do not have any problems with the 1693s burning a disk or playing a burned disk, or with any functions. The unit will record a commercial disk from another and than play it. This is with the R04 as itself, or as a 5005x with All-Wright ----HOWEVER With the 1693s drive none of the ilo’s will directly play this same commercial or any commercial disk. While this is not a major problem for me I have noticed that other posts have referred to this issue. The 1693 when placed in a PC will burn a + or – CD disk OK, The 1693 are OEM [no region set] A region 1 commercial disk will not select the region [as Liteon says] The ilo R04 is hacked and indicates region free. And the unit will do 3h Drive Info shows ---- The 1693s Lock Detected User changes left --- 5 Maunfactor resets left --- 4 Region – Not Set For region free, if that’s the problem, [ cdfreaks ] recommends using LtnRPC and hit Disable and that is it. Tthe drive should now be region free. The Utility indicates a read, write error and [OK] Press OK, Menu comes up Press Disable The Utility indicates a read, write error and drive remains the same. Now I can live with this if necessary. BUT WHY [Could be the drive firmware, speed, or smart burn ????] I have tried the different methods posted [Nothing Works] PS !! as said , the 1693s does work in the unit with all abilities and functions working fine as a 5005x or R04 But will Not play a commercial disk. [Encrypted] even though the unit is hacked and has 3hr The Original 451s Will I did post a similar question on another site and there doesn't seem an answer Do you think its some thing I'm doing wrong or is it it something to live with _________________ ilo DVDRHD04 ilo DVDRHD04 ilo DVDR04
Sounds like it's definitely a region problem .. I put a 1693s drive in a LVW-5005, but before I installed it I hooked it up to a PC and set the region to 1 .. I don't have any discs that are any region other than 1 so this doesn't matter to me ... I have no problems playing any commercial DVDs although I usually use my Philips DVP642 to play discs to save wear and tear on my recorders ...
[ catfreek ] Well thats a bummer The change you made are working on play. It sure sounds that you are correct. I did try to change the reagon. Reagon 1 or free would be fine but I've had had no luck I did put the drive in a PC and got the results in the post above, using a drive info utility The write error with the ltnRPC, is not something that should happen. I'm using win 98 SE with all upgrades. I used a clean install and some 3 downloads of the ltnRPC. All with the same results. I can-not get this drive to respond. The drive will play some disks through the FBI warning etc than quit as reported by others. I think that they, myself and you, only use the unit to record. and let it go. I'm just stubborn. Any Suggestions [Edit] Thought about that last sentence Oh Well
