Here's my dilemma, thanks to anyone who can help.

    Toshiba Satellite Notebook
    1.5 ghz mobile celeron
    512 RAM

Last week the cd-rom drive worked fine, I was burning daily and discs never took longer than 8 minutes with my slow 8x burner and Winamps burning software.

Then one day Winamp started ejecting discs after they'd been Prepared (not burned) and saying 'Complete!'. So, I uninstalled Winamp, started using Nero but that took 15+ minutes. I thought maybe the burner was dying so I purchased an Asus external burner and connected that via USB.

Now CD's are still taking approximately 15 minutes to burn no matter what speed I try. (8x-48x)

    Here's what I've tried:

    Removed all spyware/trojans
Checked the IDE controllers to make sure DMA(?) was enabled
    Uninstalled and reinstalled both cd-roms
    Updated the firmware and drivers

    Anyone have the slightest clue?

yes i defragged my hard drive and there is 33% of space available. (6.66/20)

i had thought it might be due to lack of space but cd's were burning fine before i defragged and deleted unncessary progs and files.

essentially, it was working much faster with less space and more clutter.
