I have CDRs that I burnt in 1994 that still work fine. Just a couple weeks ago I was playing with DosBox http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ which emulates a 386 with sound card for playing old DOS games. I got out one of the CDRs I burnt 10 years ago and it read fine. Several others burnt at the same time also read ok. I used Verbatim media and stored them in a cool dry place. I think as long as you use quality media and use proper storage precautions you will get a lot longer life than what that article states.

And that's why we've to backup our data, audio and movie discs (for legitimate reasons?).
