I recently setup a new computer with the following parts:

    Asus P4S8X mobo (bios 1005)
    P4 Northwood 2.66hgz
    2x256 + 1x512 RAM (PC3200)
    40gb Maxtor 133/7200rpm
Radeon 7000 AGP (Ancient, I know - but fine for this comp)
    No Name 4x DVD/RW
    No Name 52x CD/RW
WinXP SP2 - all updates current

    Here's my problem:

The install worked fine, no problems at all. Only when I tried to burn a CD did I have problems. Everytime I put in a blank disc the computer would pretty much freeze until I ejected it. If I tried to use Nero or Window Explorer to burn the CD it would either give a drive error or say there were probs with the recording process (even though it never even tried to access the blank CD) Basically the master would read disks but give a burn error and the Slave disk would not even look at any disk at all.

I tried swtich the CD/RW to master and the DVD/RW to slave, but the problem only travelled with the Slave drive. (CD/RW would read but not write, DVD wouldn't do anything)

So, I thought it was a bad cable. I replaced it - Same prob.

The drives are installed, show as working fine in Device manager. The master will read disks, the slave will not (I even tried other drives, same results).

Write won't happen at all (however, it will cache files for writting on the master, but not on the slave, no burning ever actually happens.

I did do one bad thing: I stopped a defrag early. I needed to see if the thing would burn disks (since I hadn't tested that yet), and that is when I noticed the problem.

Unfortunately I didn't try the slave drive (read or write) before the defrag issue - so I can't say that has anything do with it. It's not my computer so I won't be able to work on it all night. Can anyone help me out?

try putting both drives on seperate ide cables as they may not like each other. set 1 to slave with hd & other master or slave on secondary

Ok, I've tried everthing to get this to work, in this order:

    1) Put each drive on it's own Channel, Separetly from the HD

    2) Installed ATA100 Controller Card in case IDE2 was bad

    3) Set drives as Master

    3) Set drives as CS

    4) Reinstalled Drivers

    5) Downloaded all XP updates

    6) Uninstalled Nero and reinstalled numerous times

    7) Tried alternative drives with same configuration

    8) Uninstalled SP2

    9) Replaced Cables

    10) Uninstalled drives physically and on Device mananger, loaded them on - one at a time. Same results, together or separate.

In every case, the drives will read, but not write.

They won't even try to write. I get in immediate error stating there was a error and the disc may be unreadable - but the drive was never even accessed for writing.

In Nero, no drives come up - only a CD/RW Image Recorder and a DVD/RW Image Recorder

Hardware Devices shows everthing is working. XP is otherwise perfect, an new installation.

So, I know the drives aren't bad. The cables aren't bad. IDE Channel is not bad, - it's gotta be something with Windows.

Any more thoughts - I'm getting desparate. This is a friends computer that I sold him. I'm normally pretty competent and have been doing this a long time. This one is new to me. Please Help!

uninstall nero, defrag the hd than re-install nero. what version of nero are you using?
