All of a sudden my HP CD-Writer 8100i has been spitting out coaster after coaster with Nero?
I've had no problems before, and I burn a lot!
The weird thing is that if you're in win explorer or my computer, you can see the device, "cd drive d:" but when you double click it (with no cd in drive).. it opens
up, without the whole "please insert a disk into drive d:" error prompt, and shows a blank window (ie, no files). It doesn't have any disk stats (ie free space, used) just that it has opened the cd drive???

Anywho, This is what I've tried so far:
-removed the device from the manager and letting it re-establish (no errors showing)
    -defrag the hd
    -uninstalled and re-installed nero
    -installed the latest nero update
    -used a lens cleaner cd
-checked the firmware is up to date
-checked the drivers are up to date
    -lowered the writing speed
    -changing the media
-tried to burn different types of disks (audio, data, tao, dao)same result
    -got all windows updates
    -disabled background programs
    -full virus scan
-did a system resore (XP Pro)
    -ensured the cables are secure
-freed up more space on the hd (4 gigs free on the c: partition)

Power gets to the drive, it recognizes it's there after removal and it can read cds, play music from them, open files...it just gives me a magnitude of varrying error messages if I try to write to it.
I think the key lies in why it's able to access/open the drive without media???

Has anyone seen this before/have any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm going outta my mind.
    Donka,

    1) Try different brand cd-r(w) media?
    2) Install ASPI Layer 4.6
    3) Disable AntiVirus and in Nero during the write process. File>Preferances>Expert Features tab folder>disable load antivirus.
    4) Try a different burning application to determine if it's a software\hardware conflict.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I already
    1)used different media
    2)installed newest aspi layer
    3)disabled antivirus
    4)tried a different burning program.

I still think the key lies in why it's able to access/open the drive without a cd in the drive
    thanks.

    1. Check ASPI4.60 anyways....4.7x is sometimes wierd. BTW, just because Nero InfoTools says the ASPI is correctly installed does not neccesarily need it is.... the Aspichk program will tell you tho :)
    2. Im not entirely familiar with this but I think i read somewhere about packet writing software giving results like the one you describe?
    3. Do you have the XP CD Burning update? (Q320174_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU)

I never had any aspi layers installed before whatsoever as XP supposedly doesn't need them. As a last resort I did install the newest 4.71.2 but it apparently doesn't do anything as Nero uses its own.
2.The Aspichk program says all is fine.
    3. In regards to the packet writing software...I will search around but I've always used Nero before and I don't do packet writing.
    4. I tried to install the update from Microsoft(Q320174_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU), and it said it couldn't install as I had a newer service pack installed addressing this issue.
I also disabled the IMAPI burning service in the admin tools as I've read that they sometimes conflict/cause problems as a troubleshooting step with no change
Thanks for the input..keep 'em comin'

XP DOES need them. Nero uses its own for its purposes but what about everythign else? All the other programs cant use Nero ASPI. I dunno about ASPI4.712... dont like it much... (still think you should try 4.60)

Also, could it be your drive be toasted?

I don't use anything else to burn cds except for Nero, so I've never needed aspi.
    I will try 4.6 now.

I'm of course hoping that it's not that my drive could be toasted- but I'm trying to rule everything else out first.
    Thanks again,

Looks like your HP (Sony)8100i wen't to the grave. Consider a Lite-ON LTR 52/32/52.

Heres a simple way to check if the drive is toasted... try to erase and RW disc with it. For some reason when drives start to fail... they lose the ability to erase RWs... you will probably get an error like 'Power Calibration Failure'
