I just recently experienced no air in my house, and it feels like hell.Anyone have any knowledge on central air units,I tried a couple things and nothing seems to work.I tried pouring Clorox down the drain pipe and there is no water in my drip pan.I removed a fuse and plugged it back in to maybe make it reset, but nothing works.I called the company to come out and look at,but they won't be able to come out and look at it until tomorrow.Been having sleeping problems and heat is unbelievable like 100 degrees in my house. It feels cooler outside, but the mosquitos are terrible.Any advice from any wizards with central air units would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced and you wouldn't believe how hot it is in my house.

open the windows and get some fans till you get it fixed
good thing you were around 30 or 40 years ago when noone had central air .
you got to be a little tougher than that
i work in a factory up to 65 hours a week with NO central air and its 95 to 100 degrees sometimes and thats while iam working NOT sitting on my ASS inside a house and iam fine . so i bet you will probably make it a couple days without it. quit feeling sorry for yourself and get a fan, OMG

Hold up let me tell you something alright aabbccdd your not the only one that has worked in a factory.I spent my time working a grueling environment.I don't have the occasional fans laying around my house that you are talking about, and no I can't just go buy them as I don't have that much money at the moment. You honestly don't have a clue how hot it is in my house, and I would know better than you am I right. It is an inconveniance, and I was trying to fix my central air unit not really replace it with fans. The money that is invested on my central air unit and having it repaired is extremely high in price.Your advice you said was to leave the problem and replace it with something else am I right.I'm not going to hold on arguement on who works the hardest, but I do work alot.I work on the weekdays and on the weekends outside.I don't work in a closed environment anymore, but I know the heat you are talking about and it isn't new to me.If you think you know me better than myself than you would be wrong.Any advice on repairing it is appreciated, but talking about leaving a problem sit where it stands by replacing it is not he best solution.I'm not trying to start an arguement, just trying to fix the problem and maybe save some money in the long run if it is a do it yourself job.I thought maybe someone that works on central air units or might have some knowledge on them would be off here that could help out.It doesn't hurt to ask for help and I would do it again wouldn't you.

the gas has probably leaked out l-burna of the unit so iam pretty sure theres nothing you can do to fix it but wait for them to show up for the repair.
i wasnt trying to be rude so iam sorry if it sounded that way

If the AIR quit all at once I doubt its the freon leaking. Usually under high heat loads in certain areas you get into a low voltage situation because everyone using their central air. The first thing to pop is the run capacitor. Kind of a tin can looking device with either 2 or 3 wires on the top. Usually when they go bad they might swell up and bulge out on the top or sides. I have replaced about 10 in my neighborhood this month. Cost about $20 to $40 for the part. If its bad you will hear the machine try to start and just hum for a while then go dead. Just guessing since I'm not there.

Thanks Jerry746 for the help I appreciate it alot, but I had someone come out and look at it just recently and the problem is fixed.I had to pay alot just to fix it,and wish I would have waited because you are exactly right. The run capacitor burnt up,and the guy charged $140 dollars for the part.I feel really bad now,and having air at the moment is nice in all but I could have saved alot of money by replacing it like you mentioned.I had no clue where the problem was coming from, but you are definately right on the part and location of the problem. For the guy to come out and fix it also the labor charge was $60 dollars for 5 minutes,so that is a big difference. If it was freon there is nothing I could do since you have to have a permit to use freon, but the parts on it I could have replaced and saved a ton of money.Well I guess I should wait more often I learned the hard way,and aabbccdd don't worry about it man it's cool.

Thats actually my official line of work. I'm a service manager over 15 service techs. I'm also an EPA certified instructor when dealing with freon and recovery. Sorry I didn't read this thread sooner. I don't actually run calls anymore but try to help friends when possible. It almost doesn't pay to have someone fix anything anymore, but in the case of central air you don't have much choice. $140. for a $40. part is really padding the bill. We have to make money to pay for gas, trucks and the tech but we only up our parts about 25% over cost. We would have charged about $50. for that part. They got you pretty good.
