    hi all,

i recently bought a DVD (Pixies Music Videos) from the 4AD website but for some reason it seems to play back in black and white.

i'm in the uk and the dvd is PAL (region free, apparently), the DVD player is a Sony DVP-NS430 and i've never had problems with PAL DVDs before.

i've tried a different scart cable and i still get the same results.

has anyone got any insight as to why this might be happening?

thanks in advance for any replies :)

Without touching a single connection between your Sony player and your TV, if you play a different PAL DVD then the TV displays it in color? If only the Pixies DVD is coming out as B/W then I would look closely to make sure it's not an NTSC disc. A B/W display on a PAL TV can result when playing an NTSC disc.

If it is a PAL disc, are you using an s-video cable from the Sony to the SCART s-video jack? SCART only supports composite video so a b/w image would result here too. In that case try a composite cable.

Double check the setttings on your TV to make sure it's set for the right video mode your player is outputting. Even though you've swapped SCART cables double check for a bent pin on the connector. After that I'm out of ideas.

on closer inspection (the under-side of the DVD) i see that the disc is in fact NTSC, even though the packaging states PAL.

thanks for the reply though :)
