I've been using your forums as a resource for some time. I've searched and read and I am stumped... I've had an Aopen burner for about a year when I began to get Power Clibration errors when burning. We tried firmware updates, different software (Decrypter and Nero). Then I realized (thanks to your forums!) the burner wouldn't burn a CD or read a DVD either. After reading many of your Clibration error posts we opted to get a new burner, since the old one wouldn't read anymore. Now I'm hoping this was the right move... The new burner is an Aopen DUW 1616L Pro. In Decrypter I would change the book type to DVD-ROM so the DVDs would play on all our players. With this new burner I can't seem to change the book type. When I would change the book type on my old burner I would change the book-type using Ricoh, with the new burner I get "current setting: unknown (failed)". I'm using Maxell DVD+R 8x media. I've used this media for over a year with never a problem. Is there another way to change the book type that I'm missing or am I stuck with an un-ROM-able burner? I really appreciate any help (and your forums!).
Hi noles. I am no means an expert at burner identification. However, it appears that your burner could either be a rebadged Benq or most likely a Liteon. If this is the case, then maybe you would consider cross-flashing to the OEM version. Both Liteon's and Benq's support booktyping, and both offer booktype utilities that you can download from their Website. Thanks Mort81, I tried within Decrytper to change the book type using the Lite-on tab, no luck. I also tried the Lite-on utility. It wouldn't allow a change in book type. It showed the current disc and book types as DVD+R but the change book type was grayed out. My guess is the utility doesn't work on my model. Anyway, one of your links mentions OmniPatcher. Are you familiar with? I'm not looking at cross flashing the drive, I'd just assume return this one an get one I can burn correctly. I do appreciate your help... everyones!
noles, Omnipatcher will work with some lite-on models but it is really more for changing write strategies. If the lite-on booktype utility won't work, I doubt omnipatcher will. Another option you can try is the booktype utility in dvdinfopro http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ If you decide to exchange your drive for a different model/brand, I would highly recommend a benq DW1650 or DW1655. I like my litey but like my benq even more. Both my benq and my litey have their own booktype utility's but benq has Qsuite which incorperates even more features than just bitsetting. Lite-on has a utility called smartburn that incorperates the features that are in qsuite but does not include the booktype utility in it. You have to dl and use the lite-on booktype utility seperate from smartburn. They both have their advantages but my benq is quit a bit faster at ripping. About 4 min on average for a pressed DL dvd.
Another wall... When I went to set the book type within DVDInfoPro It says 'it seems your drive does not support bitsetting.' All drives definitely are not created equal!!! Thanks again for your help.
yeah. I can figure out how, just that I've read many people having problems afterwards. And with a burner I just got yesterday, I don't want any headaches. My heads already spinning!

@noles Mort81's advice is good. If you can return it, by all means do so. I'm a happy Benq user myself, and $28 for a Benq 1650 is a good price. It will booktype out of the box. I've cross flashed a number of drives for friends and family. It's just as easy as updating firmware - nothing complex about it. I read in the link I previously posted that a person was having a problem with your exact Aopen drive and it was corrected by cross flashing. See quote below.
