Hi, this is my first post here. I know this may sound very dumb, but I don't know ANYTHING about computers. I'm a University science student, but if you asked me simple things about a computer, I would not know where to start. Here's my probelm: Right now, I'm using Windows XP, I have a router, Linksys, but instead of using it, I just want to use the internet throgh the Cable modem, and not through the Router. I tried changing the settings but it seems that it doesn't work. Can someone help me changing the settings from using the interent through the network setting using a router, to just using the interent connect without a router, just through the Cable modem. Thanks!
Thats ok about not knowing anything about PCs. I am sure that you probably very good in Science. If I might digress for a moment. The other techs I work with can not see that. No matter if it is a Doctor or Lawyer, if they do not know anything about PC's they are stupid. OK cable modens will cache the ip address of the router , so when you connect up the pc , the pc will have a different ip and will not connect. All you have to do is turn the cable modem off, then back on again. It would not hurt to also turn the pc off , and turn the pc back on , say 30 seconds after the cable modem. If the pc does not connect right away to the internet, in run in your start menue, type in " cmd " without quotes. then press enter. Then type in " ipconfig /release " w/o quotes , also wait a few swconds for results, then type in "ipconfig /renew" that should do it, if you were able to connect before through the router. If you could not there may be something else wrong, check for firewalls, especially if you are using xp, has a built in firewall.
