I am currently cooling my q6600 @3.2ghz with a xigmatek s1283. I am reaching core temps of 60 and sometimes more depending on room temps. I would like to get to 3.4/3.6 so have considered water cooling. I can reach 3.4 stable enough but temps get too high for my liking. If i have to spend too much in order to watercool this cpu at 3.4 then i won't bother - as i can settle for 3.2 on air. (but lower noise levels would be nice) I have considered something like the 'Swiftech H20-220 compact' or the 'Swiftech H20-120 compact'. I know that these are only basic kits, but would a kit like this be adequite for my requirements?
Seem to start around 150$+. Going to newegg and sorting their water cooling equipment by ranking gives you a pretty good idea, although there are lots of individual components listed. If you're in Europe I assume the price difference would be about the same as all other gear. It's always seemed to me that you'd be better off spending water cooling money towards a higher end processor, unless you already have the top of the line. Counterpoints anyone?
I'd really advise against watercooling kits, poor quality parts only result in leaks and catastrophic damage. Bin the S1283 cooler and get something more powerful like a Thermalright IFX-14 with a decent fan, such as an Aerocool Streamliner 140mm or Scythe SFF21E. For the record, core temps of 60 are positively cool for that overclock though. There's no cause for alarm unless they reach 80.
That temp was after 8 hours, i ran prime through the night for around 10 hours and hit 65c? I'm looking into getting the Thermalright IFX-14 as you suggested in my other thread but i'd like to keep my system as quiet as possible. (and it'll be louder with two fans) ...I also don't know wether it'll fit in my antec 300. If the swiftech h20-120 can keep it at 60c at 3.2ghz on 1.3250 i might still consider it.
I've had positive experience with my IFX-14 (lapped). It is more or less equal to the TRUE, different reviews suggesting different results. You can have two slower fans on IFX-14 vs. one faster fan on the Xigmatek I have two Noctua NF-P12 fans, which are great for their high pressure. However...Thermalright manufactures a LGA1366-installation bracket for the TRUE but unfortunately NOT for the IFX-14. Future-wise, you might want to choose the TRUE instead. The IFX-14 has the backside cooler, ay, but it feels cold to touch even after 20mins of stress testing. I'm reinstalling it with different thermal tape on weekend (along with a lapped Xeon X3220, and gallium as TIM ;D), I wonder whether it makes a difference.
