I have a bunch of video files on my pc which I primarily play with VLC. VLC plays all the mpegs and wmv's and the majority just fine but when it plays back any AVI file the video moves as if it is lagging while the audio plays perfectly. It used to play fine before, I don't know what was installed to affect its playing abilities. Could it be the Nvidia update I downloaded from the windows update site or any other problem?

Check the hardware acceleration is on in the advanced display properties.

Have you tried a reinstall of VLC?

Have you checked the cpu usage in Task Manager while the avi
files are playing ? Something could be dragging down the performance.

It's VLC using 100% CPU time when playing the files choppy. When it is playing normally VLC uses almost none.

    Well now we're getting somewhere.
Whenever something is stuttering or choppy, you should *always*
look at the cpu being used - standard troubleshooting technique.

Is it the latest release of VLC?

Did you say it happens with all avi'?

What about playing it in another media player. Does it work?

    Yep version 0.8.6f

Only AVI files and DVD video now. Mpeg,WMV,etc work perfectly.

Don't have AVI codecs installed for Windows Media Player to play it and that is the only other media player installed.
