Hello - I recently bought a DVD+R Drive and installed it in the top bay of my PC's tower.. I'd like to keep the CD-RW/DVD-Rom that was previously in the top bay, move it to the lower one and continue to use it.. but when I plug in the IDE wire and the power source (both are on the same wires that is being used for the new DVD-Writer) and try to play a DVD on the old CDRW/DVD Rom, the video and audio are both slow and choppy. However, the video and audio work fine on the new DVD+R drive. I've tried messing with the Master/Slave/Cable Select pins... setting the top DVD-Writer to Master, and the below CDRW/DVD Rom to Slave.. and I get the results described above.. video and audio are choppy and slow on the DVD Rom. I then tried setting both devices to Cable Select.. no improvement. Also, there was nothing wrong with the DVD-Rom/CDRW drive before I purchased the new DVD+R drive. In fact, it was only a few weeks old. It came with this PC and wanted to upgrade, but as I said, I'd like to keep it as a secondary drive. Anything I can try or do to make the DVD-Rom work correctly? I'm by no means an expert at the inner working of a PC, so hopefully I've explained this well enough for somebody to know what I'm asking. Thanks in advance!
Did that new dvd-rom drive come with a new flat ide ribbon? Some drives do,and some don't. The main thing,you'll need 40 pin/80 wire flat or round cable. You may have the older 40 wire/40 pin cable? The 80 wire will have finer wires,but twice as many. On the 40 wire,they'll be thicker.Hard to see the difference until you put them side by side with each other. These 80 wire cables are just a few bucks,and I prefer the round cable for better air flow. Try to use separate power cables,instead of 2 power connectors off 1 set of wires. What's the wattage of your power supply? How do you have your drives configured? Primary master should be your Main harddrive Primary slave or cable select for drive on the middle of the primary IDE ribbon.Some pc manufacturers recommend slave,and other cable select.I have an extra 200 gb hd in 2 of my pcs set this way. Secondary master- I'd make it the dvd-rom drive,and set pins as master.I have my reader dvd-rw set this way. Secondary slave-using the middle ide connector on the secondary ide ribbon-use slave or cable select. One may work,while the other won't.I have my benq dvd-rws set this way. Set the jumpers according to how your drives hook up with the ide connectors. Ends: to mobo and master drive,middle connector as slave or c/s. Another thing: Go into device manager under ATA-atapi controllers/open up the tree/click on each primary and secondary/then click advance and see if they say UDMA/DMA/or if available. Make sure they don't say PIO mode. Pio mode may definitely slow it down. If in pio mode/uninstall the drivers off that particular IDE and reboot. XP should auto-hook them back up to the proper udma or dma. Edit: Last,but not least: What program are you using to try to view those dvds on your pc?
