Hi i recently purchased some ram for my Packard bell f7280 laptop which caused some problems when the comp booted up, so i contacted the supplier who sold me the ram stick and his response was as follows.

Please visit your manufacturer’s website for any available BIOS updates.
Also, make sure that your BIOS are set to automatically detect your installed RAM instead of trying to read it at a predetermined speed or capacity.
The RAM speed options are under advanced or advance chip-set settings in BIOS. Once you've updated your BIOS, be sure to run a clear CMOS.
Very often, BIOS settings will not function properly with a new revision until you clear the CMOS memory.

Can someone tell me is this quite a straight forward task & would i lose my files if i attempted something like this?

Well I'm not sure how you would clear the CMOS on a laptop, but the way to do it is to open up the pc, and look for what looks like a big watch battery. All you have to do is take that out and put it back in, and that clears the CMOS.
