Got the nasty CNN.com email virus that downloaded the Antivirus xp 2008 and the Blue-Screen Joke viruses to my computer. Yes, I know, how could I be that stupid. Anyway, after a few days of using various spyware cleaners/removers, and manually deleting infected files, I think I got just about everything. But, my SYSTEM RESTORE is still not working. The virus won't let me go back to a previous date on the calendar. It's obviously a phony screen just like the Appearance and Themes screen was before I fixed that. How to I fix this? Anybody have any ideas.
Hi Lapin3, Sorry it took so long for me to get to you. Had a lot of Honey-Do's. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt • Please post contents of that file in your next reply. Next Download and install HijackThis Please download TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT) • Double-click on HJTInstall. • Click on the Install button. • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad. • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post. • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Please post back with the MBAM Log and a HJT Log (made after running MBAM) 2OG
Thank you for getting back to me 2oldGeek. I spent a couple of days cleaning all the infected files; but, I did another scan with Malwarebytes and as hoped everything is still clean. Everything on my computer works except the System Restore function. In my research I read that I should check the System Registry for "RestoreOpenIsSafe" and make sure the value is 1. Both instances of this entry have a value of 1, but the System Restore calendar function still does not allow me to go to any previous date. This is a problem experienced by others infected with this virus. By the way, I'm really not very knowledgeable about this stuff and am just learning (the hard way). Thanks. Lapin3 Your logs are Clean and I have no idea which Trojan did this dirty work. : 0 Sometimes ComboFix takes care of this problem and other times I have seen SFC /scannow repair the damaged system files. Have you ran SFC /scannow? If not, give it a try. Go to > Start > Run and type sfc /scannow in the box then click OK See if that works and let me know. It may not ask for a system CD but if it does, and you don’t have one, let me know because there are ways around that. 2OG
Hi. sfc /scannow came out clean. Since my computer seems to be working fine, I'm not going to worry about this any more. I just wish people who spread these viruses would get a conscience. They truly are pathetic. Lapin3
To protect your machine, I highly recommend BOClean. It’s FREE and it works. I use it and never get one of these infections. In order to prevent the installation of Trojans and Malware on your machine: Download and install: Comodo BOClean Comodo BOClean protects your computer against trojans, malware and other threats. It constantly scans your system in the background and intercepts any recognized trojan activity. The program can ask the user what to do, or run in unattended mode and automatically shutdown and remove any suspected trojan application. Comodo BOClean currently supports more than 59000 malware items and offers automatic daily updates. Other features include updating via network share, tamper protection and stealth mode.
I have a 5 step plan for blocking malware and I never get any. 1. firewall - either a router with SPI or software, Comodo Pro 2. a Host file - MVPS and HPHosts, Merged 3. AntiVirus - Avira Antivir 4. AntiMalware/Trojan - Comodo BOClean 5. HIPS - WinPatrol this catches anything that falls through. It works for me... Have a Happy! 2OG
