Hi, I used Nero express 7.0.x to burn a number of dvds.
the dvds contained either a video_ts folder or avis that i burned as data files.
i've done this many times before, same installation, same software, same media.
this time i burned half a dozen dvds, each time Nero said the copy had been completed correctly (though I didn't ask Nero to compare the burns). i then erased the original files on my hd.
now i can't open the dvds - i've tried three different computers, several different writers (benq, pioneer, sony), and even a standalone player for the dvd-videos.
when i load these dvds, the computer doesn't recognize them, says the drive is empty.
can anyone tell me a) what went wrong? and b) is there any way i can recover the files from dvds that aren't being recognized. (i.e., is it possible the dvds just have to be finalized for non-multisession burning?)
thanks for whatever enlightenment you can provide!

PS While I'm at it, which plugin do I need to be able to recode and burn avi files as dvds for standalone players? THANKS SO MUCH!

What brand and speed of media did you use and at what speed did you burn? Sometimes using poor quality media can result in problems like you experienced. The only program that sometimes can recover files from DVDs is ISOBuster. How long ago did you delete the files from your hard drive? Disk recovery software might be able to get some of them back.

Does your DVD player recognize and play AVIs or do they need to be made DVD compliant?

hey laddyboy, thank you so much for your leads. i was using philips 16x dvd-r. i've used these a lot in the past with no problems. the dvds aren't being recognized in the system, when i put one in and click on the drive, it says please insert a dvd. so i don't think isobuster can help. yeah, unfortunately i deleted the files to make room for more, so most of the info will have been overwritten.
any idea what else might have caused this?
btw, i tried writing to the so-called empty dvds, and wasn't able to, so i assume something's been written to them, even though winxp won't recognize them.
    thanks!

did Nero by chance not finalize your disk? Maybe you didn't check off the Multisession! try this, I heard it worked for someone else:

use DVDDecrypter to finalize your disk. Go to Tools/drive/close/disk! make sure you pick your DVD RW drive and put the disk in that drive! it's worth a try!

@eminenz This sounds like your source file be it unknown to you or otherwise may have been recorded in another video format. If you are backing up movies to DVD media check to see if the original file or files on your hard drive are in DVD format or from a DVD source. They may have been recorded in DivX, JPEG, AVI, etc. Which can be converted 1st befored you back them up to DVD.:p

Give isobuster a shot. I had a few dvd's exactly like you described - nothing would read them - players, software, drives - but isobuster sure did and ripped the files back to my hard drive.
I would also switch the media your using to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Philips also uses a few manufactuers - some good some bad.
Nero ToolKit>InfoTool will be able to give your the manufacturer of them.

thanks to all who replied. nothing worked :-(
[bold]IHoe[/bold], thanks for the tip about dvddecrypter. i'd forgotten about that tool, potentially very useful. but unfortunately i kept getting error messages, "medium not present."
[bold]binkie7[/bold], again, i really appreciate the suggestion about isobuster pro. but, again, even it (v.1.9.0.3) would not recognize that there was a disc in the writer.
[bold]N2DVD[/bold], thanks for the interest, but, as i wrote, i've done this hundreds of times before, writing video_ts files as video dvds and avi`s as data dvds. the problem isn't playback, it's getting the discs recognized.
[bold]upshot[/bold]: i rebooted the system, it's writing fine, with the same media, but i've lost 2 dvd-rs (replaceable, fortunately) and a dozen and a half quite rare films.
[bold]but[/bold]i haven't thrown out the bad burns, and if anyone has any other suggestions....
[bold]thanks to all for your interest[/bold]
