First I want to say that I confess to not understand what "codecs" really are or what's needed for what or how they can get "conflicting" or whatever, despite reading some threads....I only know that they are needed to play or convert various video formats to DVD. Everything else about them (what ones do what, what ones are best to use, how to figure out what you have vs. what you need) is a complete mystery to me wrapped in an enigma, or something like that. So bear with me if I am not making much sense. I'm asking for help now because I'm trying to figure out what happened on my PC and how to fix it. At one point I was pretty much able to play or convert any type of video file I downloaded/etc. Something went bad on my PC and I could no longer play most files (with mediaplayerclassic) but I could still convert them to DVD format with ConvertXtoDVD and DVDFLICK, which is what I really want to do (convert to DVD), so I lived with not being able to play things anymore and just ignored the playback problem since I hardly ever use that. Then a few weeks ago one of the folks up here kindly steered me to the Klite codec pack which I installed that & it seemed to work, at least from then on media player classic started working again. But today I noticed that something has "broken". At some point I know I was able to convert "rm" files with ConvertxtoDVD but now, I no longer can; or at least now the output is just a weird green screen, where it used to work????? It gives me this error message: "Found newer REAL video support dll C:\windows\system32\pncrt.dll. Current version 6.0.0.0 needed..." That message occurs right under 3 similar messages which do not appear to be errors that talk about finding "drv232620.dll version6.0.7.3928", "drv33260dll version6.0.7.4085", and "drv43260dll version6.0.7.2389". Can anyone explain to me, or steer me in the right direction, as to how to fix this problem? Is there an easy fix to make ConvertX work with rm files again? Or do I need to learn all about codecs and how to untangle them etc - where is there anything written that explains all this stuff that is understandable?? I tried reinstalling the Klite pack but that did not make any difference. I think installing it in the first place fixed my problems with mediaplayerclassic but broke convertXtoDVD as far as RM files go??????? I am using WinXP SP2. ConvertXtoDVD is v2.2.3.258. Over the past 6 months I have installed/tried all kinds of different video type programs that I guess have installed codecs, but I can't recall what all those were.....I'm guessing one of them must have had rm support, but that has now been stomped on???? Maybe there is somewhere I can get rm codecs other than the klite pack?? Or maybe the right thing is in there but not where ConvertX can find it?? I am soooo confused... THANKS for any hints.
This might help. I think k-lite is a great codec pack. Even if some folks don't believe in codec packs, but I don't think it comes with the realplayer unless you installed the MEGA pack. So, (shot in the dark), you might install the realplayer alternative and see if that helps. THANKS. Will installing that playback program somehow allow ConvertXtoDVD to convert rm files again like it used to?? That is what I'm after. Not an app to playback files.
Desperate to get some RM files converted I tried installing that "realplayer alternative" thing. Strangely when installing it told me it was ALREADY installed as part of the K lite codec that I already had. I told it to go ahead and install itself (again) anyway). Afterwards though, nothing has changed. I can still PLAY rm files on the PC but I cannot convert them to DVD with ConvertX or DVDFLICK anymore. Sigh. I don't understand what it is that broke - and no clue how to fix it. Any other ideas? Anyone?
Correction to my original note: This statement: "Found newer REAL video support dll C:\windows\system32\pncrt.dll. Current version 6.0.0.0 needed..." Should read: "Found newer REAL video support dll C:\windows\system32\pncrt.dll. Current version 6.0.0.0 found, needed 4.2.0.0." I have tried searching the net for that to no avail (can only find 6.0.0.0). At this point I am guessing that the Klite codec pack (or whatever it is called) must have updated that dll and broke convertXtodvd because it thinks it needs an older version?????? Is that possible?????
