For that money your better off buying a pre-build system, but you'll have the accpet it has a limited useful life and very limited upgrade path.

however if you want to spend around $1000, you could get a computer worth about $2000 retail or you could try to find some dell coupons, sometimes they're really good. Like $400 of $1000 system so its like $600 dollars

Ok I've never brought a dell before but I'm planning on buy a laptop from them and I've been looking at www.meanbargains.com/dell

Here's the coupon for 35% Off select Dimension Desktops $1049+ (0QKPHG7$5$LW31) so it could be around 600-700 computer but it's good if you know what to buy and don't buy some overpriced things and little accessories.

    Or here's a $400 desktop, its $730 normal so there's about a $330 instant saving. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DB110L1&s=dhs
I'd add $130 (total $530) more to get it to 512 ram, 17inch lcd, and dvd burner.

However, i'd would get a little better system http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DE510SAP&s=dhs
and use the coupon to get about $700
