I am new to video editing / auhtoring if that is the correct terms. I recently was able to get my camcorder set up to download all the home movies I have recordered over the past couple of years. Anyway I have noticed that the .avi give the best quality play back on the computer screen and transfered a couple over, however the file sizes are massive a 60 min takes up around 10GB so my question is there a way to compress the these files so I can burn them on to a DVD and store them on my hard drive with out taking up space, or is there a better format to transfer them in for a good quality playback. Not sure if it is needed but here is the software I have: Pinnacle Studio 11 Window Movie Maker Corel Ulead Video I mainly have been using the Pinnacle. Camcorder is a Sonyhandy cam with fire wire transfer... Thanks in advance Rich
Must be uncompressed AVI. You could load the AVI into this simple converter and get the files in DVD format, ready to burn to DVD. http://dl.afterdawn.com/vsoDivxToDVD_setup_v0.5.2b.exe Import the file(s) (AVI, WMV,MPEG, VOB) Output (standard DVD file format) to a folder on the HDD. Set 'Aspect' to 4:3 (if you have a regular TV) 16:9 if you have a widescreen TV. Set 'Standard' to NTSC (if you live in North America) (PAL if your in the UK) If instead, you wish for a smaller AVI, use AutoGordianKnot. Load the file, select a custom size output (700 MB would be ok for that 60 minute video), 'Add Job' and press 'Start' The file is output as 'Xvid'; if you want 'DivX', download and install that codec separately and use the 'Advanced Settings' in AGK. Thanks attar, Will the DVD file be good for storing on the hard drive after I burn it? Or is there a better format. Also when I transfer the movies to start do you recommend staying with the avi and then converting or is there a better format to transfer in. Thanks again...
The DVD format is around 4GB for one hour running time.If it looks ok then use it as the backup. The advantage of the AVI is that a 700MB DivX/XviD file fits nicely on a CD - if you have a standalone DivX player. Unless their size is a nuisance, I would transfer the uncompressed files to the PC and compress them there - they will be erased anyway.
