Is there a program that will compress dvd so I can store them on my hard drive I would like to get them as small as i can to store them I can get them to 4.1GB still takes up alot of room would like to get them small as I can so I can store more on my hard drive.
I would suggest using Mpeg Mediator to convert them to excellent quality AVIs. Make sure you have the DivX or Xvid codec installed, along with the Lame mp3 audio encoder so Mpeg Mediator can use them as plugins for the conversion.
Ok I found and downloaded mpeg mediator Thanks to all who helped. One more question I converted one of my movies, went back to play it, picture and sound are good, but I can't use the menu it shows the menu then goes straight to the movie. Is this supposed to happen. I didn't play the whole thing to see if the extras are at the end. What is a good program to convert it back to DVIX. Tanks again.
Do you mean back to mpeg2/ vob? When it's been converted to AVI you won't be able to use the DVD menus. You could convert the 'extras' to avi too as a series of short movies, but there won't be a menu.
No, you'd have to re-author the DVD (make your own menus and chapters etc.). As long as you have a DVD authoring program it shouldn't be a problem. I've just had a thought, though- when you convert the avi back into mpeg2 it's going to be the same size (or bigger!) than what you originally started with before you converted to avi. I think you might be better considering something like WinAVI which can make half-resolution mpegs which take up a lot less space and can be DVD-authored without having to re-convert. If you want the use of menus (without making your own) you should try using DVD Shrink to compress the whole disc and put it either on another disc or leave it on your hard drive for viewing with your DVD playing program
