I would like to put all my dvds on my external hard drive. What is the best format to conver them to and what software to use? I would like to make the file size as small as possible without losing quality. I have been trying to use dvdpean to convert them to RMVB but not much success.. can anyone help?

all depends on how small you want to make your files the more you compress your dvd the lower the qaulity becomes
you could try ratdvd that will retain your menus and features or for movie only dvdtoavi using divx or xvid experiment with different resolution to balance file size with quality
