Compressing & Writing Large ".iso" Files

Hello Everyone,

I have a number of large (>7GB) .iso files and I would like to burn them onto DVD-5 media (4.7GB). I have a program that will compress then write these files (roxio disc copier) but it is unreliable at best (I've made two coasters already). When the disc is about 80-90% written, roxio pops up this dialog that says "choose write speed" (with some other language that I can't recall at the moment). There's a dropdown list of speeds whose lone constituent is "4X" so naturally I choose 4X and click "continue."

Somtimes the disc comes out fine, and sometimes not (in the case where the disc is defunct, there is a message after completion that says "transcode error 0x1"). I usually choose "6X" at the outset (the media is capable of 8X), but after I experiencing this problem, I started choosing "4X" from the beginning. Alas, the dreaded dialog box popped up close to the end of the writing process anyway. I'm using reliable media (Fuji 8X DVD+R, made in Japan) so I would sooner blame the software for this problem.

Does anyone know a reliable program for compressing and writing (in one step) large ".iso" files? (I also have clonedvd2, but to my knowledge, it cannot compress data that has already been ripped to a ".iso" file)

Any advice would be most welcome.

if it's a movie you're trying to compress, DVD Shrink will do it. Otherwise, I don't know. If you can, also try to compress a little more than default (Shrink defaults at 4464MB, most people change it down to about 4360 or 4300MB) to avoid the very edge of the disc, which gives people problems sometimes.

it is a movie, but the problem is that i no longer have the original disc... just the ".iso" file. roxio does the trick, but not very well--it has a poor success rate.

 

CloneDVD2 will do your file.



Then just open your file.

 

Shrink will also do it, click File, Open Image File, locate ISO.

that would be great if i could get clonedvd to do it. perhaps i'm missing something, but when i try to use clonedvd to write my 7+GB ".iso" file onto a DVD-5 (4.7GB) disc, it tells me that there is not enough room on the disc (well, obviously!!). it only seems to be able to compress during the ripping process, i.e. when reading from the original source material.

if i am missing something, and clonedvd can in fact do what i am describing, please correct me.

I am sorry you will need to use DVD Shrink first, because your ISO is bigger than 4.5. CloneDVD can then be used to burn if you want to.
