Depends on the avi and what you want. Winrar for instance will work quite well if the avi contains raw RGB and PCM audio. But you could also achieve decent results using numerous lossless codecs and retain a playable avi. On the other hand an avi containing say Xvid video and mp3 audio won't compress well at all using winrar, 7-zip and the like since it is already highly compressed.
