DVD Shrink is the best of the freeware and I've never ventured out to try any of the others because a. they are typically payware and b. they don't do as good a job as DVD Shrink (which is free)

All the DVDFab products are good, but the only free one is as you mentioned DVDFab HD Decrypter and doesn't compress. Slysoft has CloneDVD, but it isn't free. And my favorite pay application is DVD2One, which surpasses all of the rest IMHO...including DVD Shrink and Nero's own Recode.

If you don't mind waiting on your finished product then DVD Rebuilder is unrivaled in it's quality, but it takes alot longer because it actually rebuilds your files from the ground up while as it compresses.

DVD Shrink still works like it should and the reasons you are getting errors is probably because of the ripper you are using not removing all the protection. What are you using to rip your DVD's with? I would suggest DVDFab HD Decrypter for an excellent freeware ripper that is updated often.
