Ok, I am a total, snot-filled newb who is trying to backup DVD's. Now, I have used both a DVD Shrink/Nero combo and DVD Decrypter (I prefer Decrypter) to rip Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Vol 1, Disc 1 DVD to my computer. No problems there. However, when I use either Nero or Decrypter, my computer cannot recognize my blank DVD. The discs I'm using are Imation 8x DVD-R 4.7 GB discs and my DVD burner is a Khypermedia burner. I checked the drivers for my DVD burner, and Windows says everything is working properly. Keep in mind, it successfully ripped the DVD perfectly. Do I have a bad batch of DVD's? What's wrong?
Hello lastrednk. Can you provide the exact model name for your Khypermedia burner along with the firmware version. This information appears in the righthand panel of DVD Decrypter. If you use Nero could you post the last section of your burn log beginning with your name and program serial number, omitting both before posting. The log is in the following path: Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory. Unfortunately Imation blanks are made by three companies: CMC Mag, Prodisc, and Fuji. Only the Fuji blanks are of decent quality. The others are so-so. Nero probably won't ID the blank so could you download DVD Identifier and post the media ID code for the blank Imation media. It can be downloaded from here: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ I suspect that your drive's firmware may not be recognizing the media, but that is only one possibility. Providing the requested information may help in narrowing the cause.

I even bought some new Memorex DVD's and my computer STILL didn't recognize them. Although I think I found out my problem. Using DVD Decrypter, I did this: Tools>>Drive>>Capabilities, and it just so turns out my DVD drive CANNOT read DVD-R's. Turns out I got a shitty DVD-RW I guess. If there's any other problems you see, please post them. Otherwise, you can disregard this thread from here-on out.
Two quick things. Your Nero is really out of date. Nero 6 is up to 6.6.0.16. Better go to http://www.nero.com and get the update. Second you have InCD installed. It needs to be uninstalled because it causes burning problems from time to time. Download the InCD Clean Tool from below and run. http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/General_Clean_Tool.html I'll look over the log and post more below.
This dvd-rw drive may be plus format only. Try some quality plus format media. Imations aren't exactly quality media when it comes to dvds. A huge sale this week at staples,so we'll see many burn logs from them. Also uninstall the INCD packet in nero. This can also cause problems.
Your burner should be able to burn both +R and +RW media. But I think you are correct in that it doesn't burn -R or -RW media. Also, were you trying to do a direct copy from a DVD to a blank DVD? I see the message "This DVD is copy-protected and cannot be read" If you are it won't work without dekeying software. Were you trying to burn an image file to the blank? For future reference here's a link to some guides for backing up your DVDs: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm Many use AnyDVD running in the background to de-encrypt for backing up. A 21-day free trial is available at: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anydvd.cfm
Here's some info on that kypermedia dx082d drive. Also goes by cyberdrive which is a benq 800 and memorex used that same drive as well: http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/8491 Plus format only.
Why is your log so short? and why won't it show the firmware. But I think that it's unneccesary b/c the guys here seem to have figured out why it won't read. I was just curios.
GlueEater, I think the firmware is there. It's 10sB. Last, here's a link to the Cyberdrive firmware that should work with your burner, but no guarantees. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1746 This firmware also makes your drive -R -RW compatible.
That is his CD ROM's f/w I was talking about his Burner's f/w, which is what he should be using to record.
You guys have been phenomenal. I went ahead and got a NEC N3540A Dual Layer DVD burner. I'll post a pic of it at the bottom of this message. Bought it via TigerDirect for $41.99. I checked NewEgg first, but I didn't see a Dual Layer burner for as cheap as this one TigerDirect offered. Here's the specs: If anyone has any experience with NEC Burners, let me know. I've heard nothing but good things about them in the past. My Khypermedia DVD burner will still be of use since it can rip and burn Movie DVD's to my harddrive flawlessly. Regarding the copy-protected DVD's: I used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter before I tried to burn to the DVD. I didn't try to burn directly from the movie DVD to the blank. Regarding the Nero Clean-Up tool: I guess the Nero site doesnt like Mozilla Firefox brower. I'll try again using Internet Explorer. I just have to remember to run Ad-Aware after using it though. Yeah, I'm anti-IE too. I went with Memorex DVD-R's this time mainly because my buddy is a bootlegger and he always uses Memorex DVD-R's. If it ain't broken.....I may donate my Imation DVD-R's to my nephew or something, he's trying to learn how to backup DVD's. Yeah, I'm a dick as well. Here's the DVD Burner I'm gonna buy: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1482114&CatId=89
laddyboy, you are a God for a WEEK!!! My Khypermedia burner is now burning to my Memorex 8X DVD-R disc! I've decided to use the Shrink/Nero combo for burning DVD's, seems to work the best and the interface for both is pretty idiot-proof. You guys have been an excellent help. I'm adding this site to my Favorites!
Here's a link to Newegg for the same NEC 3540 burner, $39.75 and free 3-day shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152047 Be sure to update your firmware to 1.03 before trying to burn DL disks with the NEC 3540. The firmware can be downloaded here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ Use the modified 1.03 firmware so that the RPC (region protection code) scheme is disabled and the riplock is removed. It'll read DL media up to 9.2X then. The fw filename is 1.03bt_rpc1.zip. That's the version I use in my 3540 and it works very well. The stock 1.01 firmware will not burn reliably on DL media. Memorex blanks are usually not very good. They are often CMC Mag blanks which are pretty poor in quality. Stick to Verbatim, Maxell (made in Japan), Fuji (made in Japan), and Sony. Ridata will do if nothing else is available. +R media is sometimes preferred to -R media because it can be booktyped to DVD-ROM which makes it easier for some standalone players to playback. Don't even think of burning any DL media other than Verbatim +R DL. While the Ridata D01 DL media will work with the NEC (I'v use it successfully), the Verbatims cam be burned at a higher speed and cost the same as Ridata when purchased on sale. They're $20 for a 10-pack at Office Max this week. They are regularly $30 at Newegg.
Once again, thanks laddy. I immediately canceled my TigerDirect order and went with New Egg's offer. They even had a special where I could get a 25 pack of Legacy DVD-R 8X R8X35CB discs for just a $4 shipping charge. $43.75 for a Dual Layer Burner AND 25 DVD-R's or $52.00 for just the burner? I like the first option! Even if the Legacy DVD-R's are junk, I'm still getting a bargain. Are Legacy DVD-R's any good?
