okay, I have an emachines, it has windows xp home edition, and lately it keeps crashing. like sometimes, the screen freezes, and when it freezes, you can't press ctrl alt del, or the windows button. nothing works. does anyone here have any advice?

oh yeah, and we can only restart it but pressing the on and off button. and sometimes a blue screen turns on and says somthing about turning off windowns to protect the computer and you must restart.

so, at any rate- any advice would be much appreciated. thanx.

HI BRENNA HOW DO U DO,MY NAME IS JUN,FROM THE PHILIPPINES.SOMETIMES IT IS RELATED TO MEMORY PROBLEMS/SUCH AS INPROPER INSTALLATION OR,NOT THE SAME TYPE OF RAM MEMORY FREQUENCY,BRAND.BEFORE TRYING THS BE SURE THAT U ARE WORKING ON A NON STATIC WORKTABLE,NON CARPETED ROOM,TOUCH THE FLOOR ON FOOT,DOING SO CAN BADLY DAMAGE YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICE,IF U HAVE STATIC ELECTRICITY N UR BODY.PLS UN INSTALL AND THEN REINSTALL THE RAM MEMORY(ALWAYS UNPLUG MAIN SOCKET PLS WHEN DOING THS) ANOTHER SOLUTION IS UPGRADE THEM, MINIMUM IS 2 GIG RAM AND ABOVE,OR IF CANT DO IT ALONE,U HAVE TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL COMP TECH,TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.ALSO CHECK IF U HAVE AN UPDATED ANTIVIRUS,SOMETIMES VIRUS CAUSED THE CRASH.CHECK THE MANUALS OF YOUR MOTHERBOARD TOO,IF YOUR RAM MEMORY FREQUENCY IS MATCHING YOUR PRESENT INSTALLED MEMORY,FOR EXAMPLE YOUR MO.BO. HAS A RAM FRQUENCY OF 667, PLS PUT ONLY RAM WITH 667 FREQUENCY.IF FREQUENCY IS 800,PLS INSTALL THE SAME TYPE 800,U CAN SEE THS FREQUENCYS AT THE RAM MEMORY LABEL,SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH,I JUST WANT TO HELP U ALL MY BEST

its okay, I figured it out by opening my cpu and dusting it out. the vents and the fan were LOADED with dust, so wehenever I used dvdshrink, my computer crashed. or too many programs at once. once I did that it was fine.
AND cleaning out all the coins my kids put in it through the vents helped too, lol.

yeah, I just searched under afterdawn "dvdshrink freezed computer" or something like that and it helped.

    thanx a lot.

ur welcome, cleaning the cpu every 3-4 months is good enough, just be careful not to overclean electronic parts.i only use alcohol 120%,dvd decrypter and Ulead Burn. Now 4.5 SE.all work perfectly.try to limit the tabs u open,3-4 tabs is ok,it makes yur memory and processor slow. hahahhha better buy the kids some piggy banks in order to avoid them inserting coins n your comp case, and they can accidentally touch grounded parts too, tell them not to touch the back panel ok,have a nice day to u
