Riddle me this, all of a sudden my computer does not see its cd-drive. I bought an external and it acts the same way.I try to update drivers and it errors out. Go to "my computer" and neither one even shows up. If you put a disk in it powers up and spinns the disk but thats it. Is there a virus out there that will cause this or is it hardware related? If anyone has any ideas what this might be I'd love to hear them. thanks
does the bios see the drive, is there an error code like 19 or 41, is there an exclamation mark in the device manager??
No error message of any kind. I'm not sure how to check if the BIOS sees the device. Yes there is a yellow " ! " in the device manager.
If you open device manager, under cd/dvd drive yoou see the name of the drive. The "!" is directly over the name of the drive. When I installed the external drive it too showed up in the device manager but italso had the yellow "!" overits name.
disconnect the external drive til get the internal drive on line again, also to see if the external is conflicting with the internal drive. if still an exclamation mark on the internal drive after disconnecting the external drive, uninstall the internal drive from the device manager than restart windows so can load it's driver.
ok. the external is gone. I uninstalled the internal and restarted the computer. As the system ( XP Home ) was coming up ,down in the right-hand tray, a little found new hardware bubble showed up. No error mesgs but also no " your new hardware is ready to go " bubble either. Went back to device manager and the device name is back along with the exclamation mark.

what drives are on what ide cables & what are their jumper configuration as in master, slave or cable select??
to be honest with you all those questions were greek to me. I have Toshiba Satalite laptop and the device manager says I have a Matshita UJDA740 DVD/CDRW
try uninstalling the secondary ide controller & the rom drive than restart windows to see what happens.
Got R Done !!!! It turns out it was the registry. I found the answer in another part of the forum so thanks alot y'all
