You should have gotten an oem media center disk with it. I would complain to the place of purchase. But if xp is all you have. Lots of problems mixing one os with an other os, even though they seem close to the same. Maybe try western digital data lifeguard, it's free. I've used this utility dozens of times to transfer data to new hdds. You can format with it too. Try copying it to disk and running it off the disk drive. www.westerndigital.com then support, downloads, data lifeguard. Ir find a format utility and start from scratch. Hope it helps.
Sorry, I'll layman it down for ya. Your computer is screwed up right now. You would be better off to start from a clean slate with xp. Trying to fix all of the errors is a nightmare. Your version of XP sounds like it's older than the media center, but there was 98me, and some other variations. The problem lies when you start to install xp it may not let you. Had it happen several times. If you can't just put the cd in and restart the computer and let windows install itself, we'll have to try some things. Try to create a rescue disk on a floppy from the os you have installed right now on the computer. Go to my computer, select 3 1/2 floppy, "with a floppy inserted." Right click on 3 1/2 floppy, click format, select create ms dos startup disk. Click start. When it's done leave the floppy in, restart the computer, it should boot to a dos prompt, like this "A:." With your xp cd in the drive, type, "cd d:, or cd E:. Depending on how your drives are setup. If d: shows type, setup, windows, or type dir /p and look for an *.exe file. Mine says setup.exe, But there are a lot of different commands to start various versions of windows. Whatever the *.exe file is enter it and it should take you through. Make sure that you select to install, not repair. Let it do a full format on the drive, not quick. If it says the version you are replacing is newer and cancels, Then type at the d: prompt, d: format c:. Some disks will let you do this. If your computer doesn't read the floppy on boot. I will have to really confuse you. But it can be fixed, don't give up. If I missed any loopholes I'm sure someone else will read this, correct me harshly, and tell you their tricks. CD.
