Hey I am running Windows XP with two hard drives attached. Everything was going fine until a couple of weeks ago when the computer started crashing. I did the usual virus checks and stuff but nothing seemed to work until I disconnected my 80g secondary hdd. After that the computer booted just fine without it attached but when I attach it and fire on my computer the computer detects both hdd's but only boots until just before the login screen and doesnt get any further - theres just a blank screen(After the screen with the windows logo and the wee green bar below it).
I'm just wondering if you think the hdd might be dead. Because I haven't changed anything (worked fine for almost two years) and it just started to crash and not boot up.

I am confused because it detects the hdd and even seems to load windows then it freezes.

one master & one slave or raid or whatski?

Operating system on both for dual boot?

80g secondary hd is a slave drive?

Harddrives suffer from heat...yes (hangs head) certain models from certain brands toast themselves more often than others do.

XP likes to hang where you said whenever a computer has a faulty hardware issue.

Test the 80 gig in another computer but remember to pin it as a slave if it's an IDE

    need more info hence questions

give us updates on what you know and have tried

Hey man thanks for the reply - sorry for being so vague. The 80g drive is set as the slave the os is only on my primary hdd I dont dual boot - I use the second 80g drive for just storing files. Am just about to test on another pc and will get back. Thanks for the help

Yeah chnky18 it looks likely, I swapped the ide cables about and pc boots fine no matter what one is plugged into my primary drive so its not an ide problem and it could detect both drives anyway. Thanks for the input.

Okay, I plugged everything back in (both hdd's) and voila - the pc managed to boot fully. It got to the blank screen and after about two seconds it went to the check disk screen then proceeded to the login screen. However when I try to access files or folders on the secondary disk, the pc gets very sluggish. Then when I startup the pc again it doesnt work. Any ideas what is wrong??
