My advice is to check and make sure that your hard drives are set to dma and not pio (this will cause slowdown and cause crashes). If that checks good, you might want to disable your antispyware software, and see if that is causing the slowdown. I've used webroot spyware sweeper and also spyware terminator and both would slowdown the computer considerably. By there nature antispyware software has to analyze in realtime every piece of data that is read or written to the hard drive.

If your antispyware software is the cause, my recommendation is to use "returnil" to protect your computer from spyware attacks. It won't slowdown your computer.

Does the computer crash when you open folders with video files? If it does you might have to disable the thumbnail display for windows explorer.

Description: When opening folders with movie files in them, windows explorer (the desktop) crashes.

Problem: This is a known issue with Windows XP's braindead video thumbnail thing in Explorer, it's buggy and doesn't always know how to handle things not supported by MS, and occasionally fails on things it does know how to support too. Every now and again it will crash and take Explorer down with it. Easy to solve thankfully.

Solution: Windows XP: * Go to Start -> Run... and type
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

Press enter. Done. It's as simple as that. If you, for some reason want it back, simply do the same thing again, but remove the "/u". That is: Start -> Run...regsvr32 shmedia.dll

    I would check that first.
