    The problem could be quite a few things. Spyware, virus or corruption.

    Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly until you see a screen that asks you how you want to start Windows).

    IF you can get into Safe Mode, Go to Start > Run. Then type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Write down what is listed on the Startup tab. Post the results. While in Safe Mode, run your anti-virus program (do a full system scan). Also, if you have anti-spyware run those before trying anything else. Next run System File Checker. Go to Start > Run type "sfc /scannow" (again, without the quotes) Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it. When all of the above is completed, reboot. Post your results.

    Well if you come to a screen with no icons and desktop...Its an OS issue....if you have the XP cd then try recovery console....chkdsk /r..there is a space after chkdsk...when the computer asks you for an admin password just hit enter....this could repair the OS....if this does not work you might have to try OS reinstallation

    I recommend you to try to uninstall some programs that seem to be bootin up while its at the desktop...perhaps some antivirus software, software having to do with some hardware.... i think yoiu might have a bad RAM, but other than that, you can freshly install a new OS

    Restart and go into safe mode and

    click on start-->run
    type "mscongif"
    then click on the startup tab and unselect some program and see if that fixes the problem.
