ok my bro was open up my desktop trying to install some ram and accidentally he touch the cpu like pretty heavily and it doesn't turn on after that i tried to fixed it but doesn't work plus i saw like a tiny smoke coming out from the top right corner of the board. i have a gigabyte k8ns nforce3 754 thanks in advance.
Most likely you are looking at getting a new shopping list together. Was it the CPU fan that he touched, and this no longer works. If so and you turned it on, then you have probably overheated and cooked the CPU. If that is the case, you can probably get away with just another CPU and fan. What exactly happens when the PC is powered up, all mesaages on screen and all known working and non working parts on board, with more info we can determne how bad the damage is.
It doesn't look good at all. Chances are something has shorted out and burned out a component or track. What exactly happened to the CPU and how did you try a fix it. If that was the cause to start with, then chances are you are looking at a new Board and CPU, and maybe brother as well!
Smoke is a very bad thing, even a little bit. Your problem now is what went wrong, and what is salvageable. Problem being that if one part is bad, say a memory stick, and you use it in a new build, you might see that puff of smoke once again and this time, in a new system. Same goes for your CPU, etc. I do believe it is time for a new build without any spare parts from your previous system. How much do “troublesome brothers” go for nowadays on eBay? Maybe enough to pay for your new system?!?!? Just kidding...
ya i'm probably building a new machine, i hope the rams and the hd are still good. anyway i'm wondering if i bought a new board and cpu can i use the same hd and ram and pick up where i left off???
If you saw smoke then basically you need a new PC. remember all those anti smoking adverts that told you smoking kills. well the same goes for computers. your motherbard is dead. your processor is most likely dead too. Any memory, pci devices and graphics cards that were on the board at the time will need checking in another mobo (i wouldnt let your bro do this ) as they could well have been damaged aswell, same goes for your hard drives and cd rom drives
@evilh0ly Maybe SypherTek will lend you his MB for testing your old hardware. This way if they prove to be fatal and fry the board, at least it won't be yours. <G> Most quality PC repair facilities have testing equipment that can verify if what you want to use in your new build from your old PC is still functional. This includes equipment for testing memory as well. Good luck
try replacing the motherboard 1st with old cpu to see if board powers up to see if a short in cpu or not. add a stick of ram, powerup than add videocard & powerup to see if posts. smell the psu 1st to see if have burnt electrical smell or not. if post than add 1 drive at a time to see if powerup & seen by motherboard.
You can certainly utilize the capabilities of a dual core CPU with XP home. The dual cores will allow you to work on two operations separately from each other, just like having 2 CPUs, any subsequent operations will be spread over the 2 cores the same way as multiple operations are handled by a single core now. You can not however use the full power of the CPU, as it will be 64 bit ready, and as you are not using win XP64 then obviously that functionality will be redundant until you either use win XP64 or wait for the new release of Vista. Personally I would only recommend AMD, but I'm sure you'll get just as many people going down the Intel route. P.S. You will obviously be unable to test your existing CPU in a new board if you go down the dual core route, as they are only available in 939 socket not 754 you are currently using.
how are these babies??? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562 x2 3800 manchester core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128301 Gigabyte Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817152022 psu since my old one is only 350watt and i have a old geforce 6800GT pciex16 given to me by a good friend of my, and piz tell me if i'm missing anything.
Think on the positive side. A: You'll probably never do that again. B: You can now look forward to a nice new PC (providing your brother doesn't help you build it).
Not sure about the Mobo as I have never used Gigabyte, but the CPU is good. A mate has one in the Asus A8N-SLI overclocked to 2.6 Ghz and it is very stable with watercooling and good memory. You may want to think about changing your memory if what you already have is not good quality.
i went down to BB and bought 2 stix of the 512 corsair that's on sale. also water cooling is not very cheap i'm not planning to overclock my cpu.
