I have an HP Pavilion XE783 with Windows ME. Recently I replaced that computer and put it into storage. Today I attempted to hook it back up. When I turned the computer on nothing came up on the monitor (I thought maybe the monitor might be bad so I used the monitor from my current computer. Still, it didn't work). The computer does turn on, but I have my doubts as to whether Windows is even loading. I have tried to shut the computer down using the power button on the tower, but that doesn't work. Also, I have tried to restart using ctrl-alt-delete, but that doesn't work either. Can anyone help me out? What might be causing this and any ideas on how to fix it would be much appreciated.
Start with the most obvious first. Remove the videocard and reseat it. It might have gotten jarred a little loose when you moved the computer.
Thanks for the quick responses. I have a concern though. I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to fixing a computer. Is reseating the cards something that can be done without much difficulty or would it be better to take the computer into a repair shop?
With the exception of the graphics card that will have some sort of latch (if it's AGP), all the other cards just push straight in and pull straight out. On the top of the card bracket (the "L"-shaped metal piece attached to the backs of the card) there may be a screw attaching it to the computer case. Undo the screw, pull the card straight out, then push it back in straight until it bottoms out--very easy. If you do have an AGP videocard, look at the front end of its socket where it connects to the motherboard, there should be a small plastic lever. Rock the lever forward, and the front of the card should pop up a little. Then you can wiggle it out and push it back in. The RAM will have little plastic latches at each end of each memory stick. Push the latches out and down, and the RAM should pop up.Push the memory back in until it bottoms out. Those plastic latches should automatically snap back into place. Just make sure that you have the computer unplugged and you ground yourself before you open up your computer case and start futzing around in there.
