Hey, for Christmas I got a car simulator. It has a controller that you use with it that requires a gameport (ibm 15 pin) I have a newer computer, and dont have that. There were 2 ways to get one:

a.) buy a new soundcard with one on it
    b.) get an adapter

I couldnt find an adapter except for one that was a radioshack one on ebay, but they didnt have one at the store. I got this sound card instead. http://cgi.ebay.com/CMI8738-6-chann...oryZ3701QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem no company name. all i know is that it is c-media.

I try to play the game, and right when i click "ok" on the game screen to start playing, the computer immediately reboots.

I thought it might be the power supply, but did some tests and i dont think it is that.

    any ideas?
    Thanks
    -Pat

Right click My Computer, go to Properties. Click on Advanced. Click on Settings under Startup and Recovery. Uncheck "Automatically Restart".

Try again. If it crashes, you should get a blue screen with some information on what is causing the crash.

Post that info for all, and someone will be able to help ya! :)

Here is the home page for that sound card:

    http://www.cmedia.com.tw/product/CMI8738.htm

If you have your Administrative Tools in your start menu, go to Event Viewer (if your Error Logging service hasn't been disabled). You might find what's causing the crash. Look for any red X's...

Check for the latest versions of your system drivers (chipset, video), download and use the latest sound driver for this card (found at that site)...and download the latest patch for your game if it's available.

If that card runs thru any other test you can throw at it, other games, music etc...then the game and your card don't get along too well, so a driver update or game patch may resolve the issue.

Yeah disable and uninstall the onboard.

You can re-install it later by downloading the onboards drivers.

ok guys, somehow I got it to do that screen. after copying it down for about 10 minutes, here it is.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shhit down to prevent damage to your computer.

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then Select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xFF9F1000,0x00000002,0x00000000,0xF7BAB4B3)

    *** cmaudio.sys - Address F7BAB4B3 base at F7B867000, Datestamp 3dd89c0b

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

that is what it said. Judging by the cmaudio.sys it is from the soundcard. tell me what you guys think I should do. Thanks a lot.

Yeah its your sound driver or card. Did you try playing games while your sound is DISABLED like we told you?

Also, go to device manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation points or anything red.

Well if you updated all your drivers and and games do work when the sound card is disabled...then it looks like you need to get a new sound card. But the again...

Actually, I have integrated C-Media 9761A 6CH. Audio...and I was getting the SAME CRAP. My computer would restart while playing games. So what I did was:

    1. Updated my Motherboard BIOS.
    2. Downloaded Driver Genius Pro Edition, which shows ALL the drivers which need updating and automatically links you to the file to download.

After doing those two steps, my system hasnt restarted ever since.

I could give you my account for Driver Genius Pro if you would Like to try it(cuz it ain't free) :)

ok, well I finally found a different driver for it that works. the game will launch now and get ready to race. But now with this driver, it says the realrace controller isnt connected, (in the control panel->game controllers) You know any way to get this controller to work? It doesnt seem like the gameport is recognizing it with the new driver. Thanks

Try going to the game controllers manufacturers website and download the latest drivers for that controller as well.

If you want you can just tell me the manufacturer and model of your game controller number and I'll find ya the drivers.
