My computer started shutting off on me the other day. Then when I tried to rebot it would not go back and load windows7. It would just stay on black screen that says windows. so i ran in try and fix mode butit just kept saying loading files for over an hour. So i checked connections in computer everythng looked fine. I tried starting up and after 9 times it finally worked. but still keeps shuting off after awhile. I have got it to work 4 out of 50 times, does not stay on longer than an hour. I have had on for 40 min now and hasn't shut off but will. Ran norton says no virus. Should I earase everything and reload windows 7. Any thoughts Thanks Dan

For starters, you have at least one virus, it is called Norton. This does not necessarily sound like a virus issue, but I would scan with malwarebytes to make sure, and I would remove norton regardless.

If you have added any new devices in the last couple days (this includes USB), I would pull them to see if that changes things.

I would do a check on the temperature sensors.

Wiping and starting over is usually a good "shotgun" approach to a problem...and it really is a quick thing to do, assuming you have already made backups. There are tons of different things we can try to get windows working, but there is always the chance that it is just a hardware issue and we won't find the problem...or even that it is a software issue that we never think of testing for. That is the great thing about a fresh install of the OS...it either works or it keeps having the same problems...it is repair and diagnostic all in one.
