I desperately need help! I'm trying to transfer files from my old desk to my new laptop via USB 1 crossover cable. I've searched all over the internet for good tutorials to help me with this but found nothing. Can someone please offer some help? The desktop has XP Pro and the laptop has XP Media Edition. Only my laptop can connect to the internet wirelessly.
is there any possibility of using a CAT5 crossover cable for a network rather than using a USB cable as this would be much simpler and faster for these to OSes.
Thanks for your response. Is that like a 2-way ethernet cable? If I get this cable, how to I set my computers so that they can "see" one another and share files?
Try to find the cable on Ebay. Much cheaper there. As far as set up goes. If you chose to use TCP/IP you will have to manualy give each system an IP address. The IP addresses should not be the same on the systems. Give one 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 Also, even though it is not necessary but makes things easier, make sure they are both in the same work group. After doing this you can then search from one computer to the other. Right click "My network places" select search for computers. Hit enter (dont fill in the blank field) If you do not want to mess with TCP/IP you can install IPX/SPX/NETBIOS. NO configuration will be needed for that protocol. But still put in the same work group. Right click "My network places" select properties. Right click your network connection and select properties. Click install double click protocols. Double click IPX/SPX/NETBIOS. DO that on both computers. Make sure the cable you get is designated as a cross over. A patch cable will not work for you in this scenario. Good Luck -Del
basicly all u need is a network cable (crossover is used for computer to computer connection patch for computer to hub router ect) basicly all u do is do the network setup wizard does nearlly all what mr del said but automaticly) in network connections and enable file sharing. Mr_Del hey no offence ment but were dealing with newbies and ur post is a bit of a "brainfull" for newbs ok just sum advice dumb it down a little
That wizard does not set up the IP settings. That will have to be done manually. It will set up the work group but that's about it. Also to an extreme newbie they can get confused in that wizard when it asks the type of set up. It also will not install IPX if you chose to do so. TO make you happy I will include this. To set up IP information. Right click on "MY network places" Select properties. Right click on your network adapter and select properties. Find TCP/IP in the white window and double click it. There is where you put in the IP settings. -Del
I appreciate the advice guys. Unfortunately last night I was screwing around with the network settings (while using the crossover cable), and now I can't get on the internet. I know it has something to do w/ an invalid IP address. I was, however, able to access the shared files on my new laptop through my old computer. Now if I could just figure out how to do the opposite. So now I have two problems: 1. Restoring the internet on my laptop. (I already tried using Windows restore previous settings and I called Microsoft help support) 2. Allowing my new computer to see my old computer.
If that cross over is plugged in you more than likely will not be able to use the internet unless you have a second network adapter. If you are saying your through with the Cross over and plugged the Ethernet back in for the net and are having problems then do this. GO back to where you set up the IP manually. Click the Dot that says "Obtain IP address Automatically" That should fix you up. Make sure the DNS is set the same way. -Del
OK, I got my laptop back on the internet. I had to reinstall the wireless network adapter. (Very important. I realized that a wireless connection w/out the correct wireless adapter is very unstable.) Anywho, I still can't see the my old desktop on the network I created using the Network Wizard and changed in IP addresses. Any clues as to what could be wrong??? -Kenji
dell but the network wizard sets it to auto which is most of the time adequate Edit: see obtain automaticlly is what the wizard does which "seems to be working"
