How do you have your computer connected to the Internet? For example, are you using wireless or do you have an ethernet connection to a router or switch? The obvious first thing to try is rebooting your computer. You can also go into the command prompt and type "ipconfig /release" and then type "ipconfig /renew" (assuming that you're not using a static IP). You'll also want to make sure that you have working DNS settings. It's possible that you're connecting to the Internet, but that DNS isn't resolving the address, thus you're receiving a message that the page cannot be found. OpenDNS offers free DNS if you want to try the following.
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

Also, I've seen it several times where someone will say that the Internet isn't working only to find out that the home page that they're using is down. I'll type in a different address, and it'll work fine. Make sure that you've tried several sites. You can also trying using the ping command to see if you're getting an outside connection. Go to the command prompt and type the following.
    ping ping.symantec.com

If you have a working connection, you'll receive a reply with the amount of time it took to respond. It's also possible that you have spyware or something else hosing your computer. If that's the case, you might try running a program called "winsockxpfix.exe". There are numerous issues and fixes for this type of situation, so let's start at the beginning and see where this gets you.
