computer wont play avi files

    my computer will not play avi files. i have five avi files on my coputer that always played before now they dont. i even downloaded a new one and it wont play that ether. i am trying to play them in windows media player and realone player they both say files are corrupted or unsupported data i cant even open them to encode them any help will be great

    Try playing them with mplayer or VLC. Neither relys on installed codecs/filters so it will tell you if it is a problem with the files or your setup.

    More simply I would try installing Xvid and freeware version of DivX. They cover 99% of the AVI types, Xvid is free and DivX must be purchased only if you want COmpress files, nor DECompress.

    i thank you for your help. i installed divx and divx player and it would play in divx player but still not in windows media player or realone. when i restarted my computer after i installed divx my computer kept freezing and giving me and error every five sec, somthing about my router. i did a system restore back to a week earlier and now everything works like new. i dont know what was wrong but it is fixed now thanks for everyones help
