Computer won't recognize Ipod Nano

Hi! Just received a Ipod Nano,downloaded software and plugged into usb port, computer won't recognize it. I tried different ports and no difference. I hooked it up to my wifes work lap top, it worked no problem. I have a Dell Optiplex GX240 1.8 GB,640 ram, with Windows XP Pro service pack 2. Went on line with Apple, no help. Any suggestions? Thanks All that sows on screen is do not disconnect. I tried resetting, no help.

 

That is interesting I had a problem with an iPod not getting recognized that gives me hope that it might work on a different computer. But I don't think so because I can hear the HDD click and stuff. But if anyone knows anything else it would be cool to know.

 

have you guys tried formmating the ipods into ntfs format.

i would the cd that comes with the ipods, let it run and will tell you if it needs to be formmated.

if the ipod is in mac format the pc will see it, but a mac will see a pc format ipod.

 

No dude it is in the right format it just one day didn't sink up to the computer and hasn't ever sense and you can't reformat the ipod because it won't sink up to the computer.

That has been happnd to me but when i left it on all night the next time it worked like magic

 

I tried leaving it on all night, without success.

 

Just force it into disk mode by holding the Menu + Center buttons until the apple logo appears, then immediately press and hold Play/Pause + Center buttons until it boots into disk mode. Then, plug in the iPod. If your computer still doesn't recognise it, it must be a problem with the USB ports on your computer.

It makes me think since it works on your wife's laptop that it may be a problem with the USB ports on the computer. Are they the USB 2.0 version?

 

have had this problem here is how you fix it

you need the linux installer for ipod to format the the ipod completly you have a corupted file on the ipod which will not allow you to view the ipod anymore

same problem occurs on the apple ipod mini for mac

 

I would do the disk mode thing that I posted earlier before you tried all this fancy crap. This usually will fix the problem.

call apple? or take it into the store.. if you're still under the one year.. they will replace it.

I returned the first one, second one same problem. I called support, after a couple of hours and two techs, they told me to buy a high speed usb card. That is when I plugged it in to my wifes Dell laptop and it worked. Still wondering if it's worth the money for a high speed usb card. My printer and scanner both work the way it is now.

 

Well, the iPod requires a decent USB card, so if you want to use your iPod somewhere else besides your wife's laptop, then I'd go for it. How much would it cost you? Just curious.

Okay then, if it's gonna be that cheap, then I'd DEFINANTELY go for it. Just my opinion. ;-)

 

I bought a 2.0 usb pci card and installed it, but my computer won't recognize the 2.0 and all it gave me was four more 1.1 usb ports. Any ideas? Do I need a new motherboard?

I'm not sure if this is the same issue I had, but a few months ago I would plug in my iPod and it wouldn't update, wouldn't open iTunes and wouldn't automatically sync. I searched the iTunes sight for this problem and the answer was hidden very deep, it turned out that I had mapped a network drive to the same drive letter that the iPod uses when it connects (I want to say "G", but not 100% sure on that), anyways, I mapped the network drive to a different letter and the iPod worked like a charm. Hope that helps.
