hi all, just lately, my friends pc wouldnt start So i decided to try and fix it for him.. When i push the on off switch, the hard drive led stays on for ever, but no thing happens. the fans turn on and all, but the hdd wont. now when i go and disconnect the ide cable, the hdd starts up all of a sudden, the motherboard does that beep thigy at start up and all, but nothing is displayed in the monitor. here are the specs: WD 80 GB hdd Bestec 250W PSU 512 MB Ram K7VTA3 Ver. 6.0 mobo TNT2 AGP4x 32MB ram video card sempron 2400+ 1.6ghz cpu yes i know its old and he is very ignorant and says that his PC is just fine. He wont upgrade so like can anyone give me any advice on why this is happening? thnx
sounds like something is dead and my money is on the mobo(cpu a close 2nd), looks like he might need to upgrade after all. not a bad rig tho, all things considered, my mate has a p4 1.4ghz(or 1.6) and he thinks its the dogs dangly bits. each to their own hey?
disconnect all drive cables, remove all cards & ram except videocard & 1 stick of ram. reseat those 2. if have another videocard, try it.
sorry my bad, need to make sure i read the full post(it might of been late at night here) well then that sounds like the psu isnt powerful enough. but if it was fine and now all of asuden this i would still go with mobo. can you try your psu init first to rule that out?
hard drive is dead guys think, if it posts after you have disconnected the harddrive what might be wrong lol try a different harddrive try a different ide cable i'll read it all next time and reply when i know what i'm talking about
wow, thanks, well i did what ddp said, and i actually got the hdd to start, but nothing is showing on the screen. it might be the mobo
didn't want hd connected, just mb, cpu, cpu heatsink fan assembly, 1 stick of ram & a videocard. try clearing the cmos as found it to work sometimes to kickstart a system. try another psu as 5v line on current psu could be dead.
well, i swapped the psu and ram, but the screen still wont show. so how do i know what is wrong? should i trust my guts and get a new mobo? what is the order of importance? 1. motherboard 2. CPU 3. GPU ?
all 3 plus ram & psu. does the drives seem to be going thru their booting process? try clearing the cmos to see if that does anything.
well, the drive does seem like if it is acting normal, same sound if i put it on another computer. i took the battery off, and replaced that too, but it didnt do anything there is no post beep either, when there are no drives connected i am leaning over to a dead motherboard
